Trying to make the world a safer place, one episode at a time is no easy feat. Still, looking back at the past couple of years, Abby Ferri, Jason Maldonado and Jason Lucas are proud of the difference they’ve made in the safety community. In this episode, the Safety Justice League reminisced about the show, its meaning to them, the safety industry, and how podcasting positively impacted their work lives.
One conundrum Ferri, Maldonado, and Lucas felt all safety generalists face is when to know when a circumstance arises that goes beyond one’s field of safety expertise. Getting safety advice is one thing, but there are times when it’s time to locate a professional in a specific area and get them to assist. The League’s stance: stay away from social media advice groups and seek out true experts.
Maldonado said safety experts could make a mistake by not understanding the people they communicate with’s level of safety knowledge. “We go in there thinking, they’ll understand these risks and hazards, importance and the jeopardy we will be in if we don’t do this. And no, they will not.” Ferri stressed the importance of these safety professionals knowing and understanding some communication tools a particular company uses. When they are on a site, they can more readily bridge those gaps with additional knowledge of computers and systems.
Speaking of communication skills, Maldonado said doing this podcast boosted his confidence in his everyday work life. He is more confident leading meanings and asking questions after interviewing industry professionals on the show. Ferri and Lucas agreed. Doing a podcast home in listening skills that make responding to others more meaningful.
