GameChanger adds tiered scorekeeping, highlight pages and club messaging for basketball

Key takeaways

01

The minimum stat effort is now just score and clock, which could mean more games get covered, though anything beyond the score still depends on a person until automatic stat capture arrives.

02

The milestone to watch is fully automatic stat tracking inside AutoStream. Once that works, nobody would need to sit at the scorer's table to get a box score on a streamed game.

Three levels of scorekeeping

Brandon Rhodes, GameChanger's senior vice president and general manager for emerging sports, told SBJ the tiers came out of segmentation research on how people watch streams, from casual viewers to the most invested followers. Users said they liked the existing scorekeeping but wanted a choice about how much of it they had to do.

That fits how youth games actually get covered. The person at the scorer's table could be a stats-minded parent or someone who just wants to get the score right. A single fixed stat workflow means finding the first kind of person for every game. With a sliding scale, the lightest option is tracking just the score and clock, which could mean more games get covered once the minimum effort is that low.

The limit is real, though. Anything beyond the score still depends on a human. Company president Sameer Ahuja has long talked about a set-it-and-forget-it product, and SBJ reported that the longer-term goal is for AutoStream to capture every stat automatically while it streams. Until that ships, how deep a team's stats go depends on who volunteers that night.

Three seasons of courtside camera work

GameChanger announced AutoStream on Oct. 24, 2023, as a free feature that would be available to iOS users in November. It pans with the play using only a stationary phone, according to the company's PR Newswire release at the time. The release said coaches and parents would no longer need to set up complex and costly camera systems or depend on a dedicated camera operator to stream the game.

Joyce reported in 2023 that GameChanger built the feature in-house, creating AI models from its constantly expanding database of games covered through the app. The company also added 25 people to its basketball effort. Ahuja said the company's video is the training data for its AI models, and that having unique, proprietary data puts a company in a better position. For clubs comparing camera systems, that suggests the amount of game video behind each provider could be worth asking about.

Those figures date from 2023 and cover all sports, so they show the overall scale of the platform, not basketball's share of it. The 2023 release also named grassroots basketball partners including Prep Hoops, NY2LA, Mid America Youth Basketball and Houston Sports Access.

Brandon Rhodes told SBJ the goal is to be the home of all youth sports, which means basketball now and other large team sports later.

A highlight page for every player

Rhodes sees GameChanger's Player Game Story and Player Season Story as a way to tell the story of any player's game, season or career, whatever their skill level or stat line. Highlights pulled to those pages will be formatted to share right away with family and friends or on social media.

Rhodes' background explains the bet. Before GameChanger he spent nearly eight years at Overtime, which built its audience around the most elite young players, and five years at PepsiCo working on Gatorade. He told SBJ that basketball runs on highlights and that GameChanger can give every player on the floor that kind of treatment. For a club, a highlight page for the last kid off the bench could be something families notice and value.

One message to every team

The least flashy part of the release may matter most to administrators. The new communication tools let a club send information to all of its teams at once. Joyce, who coaches a U6 soccer team, wrote that his own parent group chat can feel overwhelming. A club operator running many teams across age groups deals with that many times over, in a sport played year-round on the travel circuit.

For clubs, the practical test is whether pulling these functions together sticks. Club-wide messaging now sits in the same app as scoring and streaming, which could give administrators one place to reach parents.

The milestone to watch is the automatic stat capture Ahuja has been chasing since 2023. Once AutoStream can keep the box score by itself, nobody would need to staff the scorer's table to get stats on a streamed game.

Stand-up Polska and what live comedy asks of ticketing

For operators running a busy calendar, the main test for a ticketing platform could be how well it handles a steady run of small on-sales.

  • 01For operators running a dense live comedy calendar, ticketing is about keeping up with new dates.
  • 02A ticketing deal counted in events describes how much work the platform does. It doesn't describe revenue: hundreds of club dates can sell fewer seats than a few arena nights.
  • 03When audiences discover a comedian online first, ticketing is the last step into a seat.

The NHL's new production operation will serve six teams ahead of U.S. rights talks

The NHL is debuting its own centralized production operation that will serve six teams this season, according to Sports Business Journal. The distribution agreements it negotiated for those clubs all include streaming via Amazon's Prime Video. Its growing local role could give the league more options for packaging national and local rights once exclusive U.S. talks with ESPN and TNT Sports open Jan. 1. Monday matinees for European prime time start Nov. 30.

  • 01When exclusive U.S. rights talks open Jan. 1, the NHL's new centralized production operation will already be serving six teams, and the distribution deals for those clubs all include streaming via Prime Video.
  • 02The NHL and NBA are taking two different routes into local media: the NHL lets each club pick its own distribution, while the NBA plans a single streaming hub for 2027-28, the final season of the NHL's current U.S. national deals.
  • 03Clubs asked to host a Monday afternoon game have one benchmark so far: a Nashville pilot that drew 17,300, slightly above the Predators' season average. That figure measures the crowd in the building, though, and says nothing about the European TV audience the games are built for.
