How can the latest innovations in electric vehicle technology contribute to extending their driving range, an issue at the forefront of the industry?

Senior Director at Allegro MicroSystems, Ram Sathappan, shed some light on the company’s breakthroughs in magnetic sensors and power ICs, while discussing the significant role of energy conversion efficiency in electric vehicles at CES 2024.

“And for that, what we have done is we have created some of the most accurate and high bandwidth current sensors out there, that pair along with their high voltage gate drivers for wide band gap power electronic switches. The combination of those two work very well in creating systems that are smaller, lighter, and allow you to save space and weight, which in the long run actually ends up extending the driving range,” Sathappan said.

Good morning, everyone. My name is Ram Sathappan. I'm a senior director at Allegro MicroSystems. I wanted to talk to you here about the latest in e-mobility. Are we there yet with extending the range of electric vehicles? I think that's a question on everyone's mind. And I believe we are with the new products, the innovative products coming from Allegro MicroSystems. Allegro MicroSystems, as you may know, is the market leader in magnetic sensors are the, market share leader. We not only do magnetic sensors. We are a leader in also power ICs. I'm here to talk to you about energy conversion in electric vehicles. It's a very key concern of automotive manufacturing companies, automotive product companies. They're all looking to figure out how we can make it more efficient so that we can extend the driving range of vehicles And what we have in front of us is some components here that Allegro Microsystems builds that go into electric powertrain, all these electric vehicles. So what we have in front of us is two key components that I wanna talk about. What it is is that you have, what we call the magnetic current sensors that Allegro is a market leader in. As well as isolated gate drivers, high voltage isolated gate drivers. That's another innovation from Allegro MicroSystems. The combination of these two components help bring in more efficient power conversion systems, which is at the heart of the electric powertrain of a vehicle. So you have in the electric powertrain, typically, what is it? What what comes up first when you connect your charging plug to a car is a onboard charger, and then you have a battery management system at DCDC converter and a traction motor inverter. All of these systems, what they are doing is really converting power power conversion from AC to DC or DC to DC or DC to AC when we are doing these conversions, there is some energy loss always happening. And the, you know, the thing that most engineers care about is how do we make it keep it efficient, reduce power loss and improve the performance of the system. And for that, what we have done is we have created some of the most accurate and high bandwidth current sensors out there. That pair along with their high voltage gate drivers for wide band gap power electronic, switches. The combination of those two work very well in creating systems that are smaller, lighter, and allow you to save space and weight, which in in turn in the long run actually ends up extending the driving range of the vehicle.

Asking the most exciting, innovative, cutting-edge companies in transportation/mobility the “Are We There Yet?” question is a lot of fun, and the focus of Grant Harrell's top video podcast series! And, it’s not a bad question as so much is truly happening in this space today. What used to be trains, planes, and automobiles is now robots, drones, and spaceships, and Grant is curious about how soon we are all going to see these technologies in action, at scale. Very few of us enjoy a car that drives itself, have dinner delivered via drone, or have taken a vacation to space, but these amazing technologies and applications, as Grant discovers within his "Are We There Yet?" podcast series, are here, or as he likes to say, "we're there"! Grant also serves as the Head of Transportation/Mobility for MarketScale, one of the fastest-growing, most-successful, fun b2b media companies in the industry! MarketScale works behind the scenes for many of the top brands today, building their brand, engaging their communities, and telling their incredible stories! Within Grant's leadership of MarketScale's Transportation/Mobility division, he enjoys working with top companies within automotive to aviation, micro-mobility to marine, drones to space exploration, and everyone in between. And, Grant encourages you to reach out to him directly and set up a meeting, because as he says, "whats the point of all of this transportation/mobility technology development if we aren't headed somewhere fun to meet someone interesting"!
