Being an effective leader is challenging. Many times, leadership isn’t born. It’s made. In most situations, leaders beget leaders, which means leadership is learned from other great leaders.

When it comes to leadership, there are always moments that shape a career. These moments lead to either success or failure, but they lead to moments of learning in all cases.

On this episode of Knowledge Is Power, Host Brandon Pfluger talked with Jeff Cozart, CEO, Juniper Unmanned, about pivotal moments that have shaped his career, significant learning moments, and how his leadership has shaped the way busy companies communicate and do business. Juniper Unmanned is the top insights provider to innovative project managers in large enterprises. Their remote sensing technologies give managers unprecedented access to info about physical assets, and their artificial intelligence and analytics give them the powerful tools to determine the best course of action.

“One of the keys in that early-career position is that I was given opportunities to lead” – Jeff Cozart

Cozart has more than three decades in the B2B industry. First, starting in marketing before moving to sales, he now finds himself at the helm of a company. So what has a leader of Cozart’s caliber learned throughout the years? Cozart’s first pivotal moment came when he was 15 years old, working at his first job. He worked as a camp counselor at a boy’s scout camp in Colorado.

“I made $200 for the summer, but it was a pivotal moment because the leadership there at that boy scout camp showed me what was possible in terms of building a team and crafting a high-performance organization that produced high results,” Cozart said. The lessons learned he has carried throughout his career.

Initially, on a path toward science with a degree in cellular and developmental biology, he ended up in entrepreneurship. But, in his first position, he worked for the Boy Scouts Of America. This led him into leadership, as he was given an early opportunity to lead.

“One of the keys in that early-career position is that I was given opportunities to lead,” Cozart said.

Listen to hear more about Cozart’s career in leadership and the lessons he’s learned.
