For some operators, Bouvet Island is the final frontier. For John (F5VHQ), it is a challenge that stands apart even after decades of DXpedition experience.

A veteran of more than twenty years in the field and Vice President of the Clipperton DX Club, John joins the multinational 3Y0K team with both experience and conviction. Bouvet demands preparation beyond anything he has encountered before, and he embraces the responsibility. On the island, John is entrusted with keeping the expedition running—overseeing food, water, sanitation, shelter, and camp logistics in an environment defined by ice, wind, and isolation.

Months of planning have gone into backup antennas, extreme-weather gear, and systems built for a place where nothing can afford to fail. When operations begin from Bouvet Island, John will be on the air amid massive pileups, helping deliver one of amateur radio’s rarest signals to operators worldwide—and showing why experience matters most at the edge of the map.

Hello. This is, John. I'm Fox five Victor Hotel Quebec. Very happy to be part of this nice expedition. I have done a lot of expeditions in the over the last twenty years, but this is something really very special. So it was about, one year ago that I, called Cesar, and, after some discussion, I was invited to join this multinational team. And, I'm very happy that we have actually three people that have made it already to Bouvet Island. And we have a couple of doctors with us. So it's really nice to be part of this adventure. I will be together with Thanes in charge of ancillary parts. So it means everything related to food, water, including toilet, the kitchen, make sure the tents, the depot, everything is running smoothly. So it will be quite a responsibility, but I I'm proud to do this. So it's now Bouvet Island, which is really a very remote place. A lot of preparation that goes far beyond what I have done in the other DEA Expeditions. You ask yourself, do I fit to this team? Do I have my role? Can I really do it? So it's a lot of very difficult things in preparation. I have done a of preparation of antennas. There is in particular some plan B antennas when we have perhaps too strong wind. I'm working on the top loaded eighty meter antenna on the twelve meter mast. So something we might use if the wind is too strong. Of course, there's a lot of preparation on all the clothes, all the stuff you have to get ready for the cold, for the wind, for the very bad weather. Hopefully, we do have a a window that we can take the helicopter, make it safely to the island and back. How can you help us? Once we make it to the island, I think listen to us for the operations. There will be huge pileups. We will try to do our best. I will be on SSP SSP operation and I'm really looking forward to working you all and get you in the log. Thanks a lot. See you.
