IATA’s Resolution 753, which encourages airlines to reduce bag mishandling by implementing cross-industry tracking for every baggage journey, will be effective in June. Member airlines will be tracking and sharing information for every piece of luggage that filters through the system. In preparation for the resolution, airlines have already seen improvement in their baggage handling performance. Using tracking data, 60% of airlines believe that they will be able to track bags across more than 75%.
AI can also improve other supporting baggage services, like trolley operations, to streamline the entire baggage handling system. “AI plays an important role in driving the future standard of baggage handling,” says Chris Au Young, general manager of Smart Airport at Airport Authority Hong Kong. “Powered by AI and robotics technology, baggage handling will be fully automated from the moment a passenger checks in their bag to when it arrives at the destination.”
