Panthers stay home through $1.3B-plus stadium rebuild
The Panthers' $1.3 billion-plus rebuild of Bank of America Stadium goes all the way down to the plumbing and wiring, with completion targeted for 2030. Charlotte's share is fixed at $650 million. The owner pays any overruns, the seating bowl gets smaller, and some season-ticket holders will have to move.

Key takeaways
Charlotte’s contribution is capped at $650 million. TSE chose the full optional scope, with private liability for overruns and maintenance assigned to the operator.
Bank of America Stadium's transformation now exceeds $1.3 billion and reaches the 30-year-old venue's mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. The Panthers and Charlotte FC will keep playing home games there throughout the project.

Bank of America Stadium seats roughly 75,000, and the work on it goes all the way into the mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. The Carolina Panthers and Charlotte FC will keep playing home games there the entire time.
Front Office Sports' David Rumsey reported the scope on Oct. 27. Executives at Tepper Sports & Entertainment (TSE), which owns both teams, told him they've dropped the word renovation. Their reasoning: a facelift doesn't cost $1.3 billion, and this project goes down to the building's systems. Both the Panthers and Charlotte FC will keep playing home games at Bank of America Stadium throughout the project.
The $1.3 billion-plus transformation of the 30-year-old stadium reaches down to its mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, and home games continue there throughout. That choice decides nearly everything that follows: the order of the work, who absorbs the disruption, and what the finished building is meant to sell.
Two teams, one job site, four years
Venue Premium, which summarized the project on Oct. 30, said construction is being phased so both clubs can stay in the building. Interior work is already underway in 2026, and fan-facing elements are scheduled to start in 2027.
Fans will be the first to notice. Front Office Sports reported that the project will reduce the stadium's capacity and that some season-ticket holders will have to move seats. The final count has not been announced, and fans still face construction disruptions that have not yet been revealed.

How the Bank of America Stadium deal is built

TSE chose the full optional scope, and the city's contribution stays fixed at $650 million. That leaves a fixed public share, private liability for overruns, and maintenance assigned to the operator.
There's a limit to that reading, though. The cap decides who pays. It does not decide how much the project costs, and Front Office Sports itself described the final bill as potentially higher than $1.3 billion. For the city, that changes nothing. For TSE, the elective scope makes the budget a running decision rather than a single figure set at signing.
Fewer seats, more rooms
Renderings released in July include new hospitality interiors, indoor-outdoor gathering areas on several levels, and a 500-level social patio overlooking Uptown Charlotte. The team has not released a suite count, a club lineup or pricing.
Back in 2024, Queen City News pointed out that the stadium hosts college and high school football, international soccer, and major concerts by acts such as the Rolling Stones and Beyoncé.
Stadium ready by 2030, hotels still pending
Kristi Coleman, Panthers president and CEO of TSE, told Front Office Sports that an NFL Draft is a near-term goal and a Super Bowl is the ultimate one. The next available Super Bowl is in 2031, the year after completion. At a July event, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell called the Panthers' facilities "Super Bowl quality" but said Charlotte's accommodations remain a challenge. Coleman acknowledged that hotels and other factors are outside the team's control.
The Draft is the nearer target. Draft sites are booked only through 2028, so Charlotte could land one well before a Super Bowl.
The 2037 date already in the deal
In June 2024, Queen City News reported that the agreement then before City Council contained a clause about what comes after this project. On or before April 1, 2037, the city and TSE would start good-faith negotiations on a new stadium in Charlotte, to be finished in time for the 2046 season. The two sides would also negotiate using hospitality funds to pay for studies. If approved, the deal committed both teams to stay in Charlotte for 20 years.
City representatives told Queen City News the clause does not mean a new stadium will be built. It acknowledges that Bank of America Stadium, opened in 1996, will be 50 years old when the agreement ends, and it sets the earliest date talks can start. The city included a similar provision in its Spectrum Center renovation deal with the Hornets.
Tepper called the naming-rights deal with Bank of America a "long-term extension" that "reflects the strength of our partnership," according to Venue Premium.
Fan-facing construction is scheduled to begin in 2027. Season-ticket holders who will have to move are still waiting on final numbers.
