American leagues court European money

George Aivazoglou of the NBA shares the stage with Eric Menell from J.P. Morgan and Josh Empson from Sixth Street. According to the agenda, the session covers the league and team ecosystem, ways to draw institutional capital and ways to build long-term franchise value. Leaders from the league, investment banking and private capital will look at what a new platform needs in order to succeed.

The NFL session takes a different angle. Kevin Demoff of Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, Marc Ganis of Sportscorp and the NFL's Henry Hodgson will discuss the league's international strategy and the growth of the game in Europe.

Financing gets a slot of its own

The agenda page also lists "New Age Sports Financing" at 11:40 a.m. Its description is plain about the premise. As sports assets grow in value and complexity, the routes to capital are changing, and the panel will cover private credit, structured capital, debt markets and alternative funding for teams, leagues and investors.

Ownership models, valuations and commercial opportunities in women's sport are the topics for Jasmine Robinson of Monarch Collective and Amanda Staveley of PCP Capital Partners.

The 11:15 and 11:40 a.m. sessions together cover a new league's pitch to institutional capital and the debt and private-credit tools used to fund deals like it.

What the Invest West audience asked for

Before its Invest West event in San Francisco on May 6, Sportico surveyed its readers on what they wanted to hear, and the results lean heavily toward ownership and capital.

One caveat: the survey went to the Invest West audience, so it says nothing direct about how the London program was put together. The program makes its own case, though. Finance is explicit at 11:40 a.m., where private credit and debt markets get their own slot. It is implicit at 11:15, where leaders from investment banking and private capital share the NBA Europe stage.

New formats and faster content

At 2:35 p.m., Mike McCarley of TMRW Sports, Don Cornwell of Dynasty Equity and António Caçorino of APEX will discuss what it takes to invent a sport's commercial viability from zero.

Media operations get the first slot of the day. ScorePlay's Xavier Green and Sky Sports' Yath Gangakumaran open at 10:00 a.m. with "Content at the Speed of Sport," on how AI and new content tools are changing the way sports organizations create, distribute and earn money from media.

The final session is the European club panel. At 3:45 p.m., Massimo Calvelli of AC Milan, Shaun Harvey of Wrexham AFC, Tom Burwell of Sunderland AFC and Olly Dale of Elevate will cover commercial growth, fan engagement, ownership strategy and international expansion.

The NHL's new production operation will serve six teams ahead of U.S. rights talks

The NHL is debuting its own centralized production operation that will serve six teams this season, according to Sports Business Journal. The distribution agreements it negotiated for those clubs all include streaming via Amazon's Prime Video. Its growing local role could give the league more options for packaging national and local rights once exclusive U.S. talks with ESPN and TNT Sports open Jan. 1. Monday matinees for European prime time start Nov. 30.

  • 01When exclusive U.S. rights talks open Jan. 1, the NHL's new centralized production operation will already be serving six teams, and the distribution deals for those clubs all include streaming via Prime Video.
  • 02The NHL and NBA are taking two different routes into local media: the NHL lets each club pick its own distribution, while the NBA plans a single streaming hub for 2027-28, the final season of the NHL's current U.S. national deals.
  • 03Clubs asked to host a Monday afternoon game have one benchmark so far: a Nashville pilot that drew 17,300, slightly above the Predators' season average. That figure measures the crowd in the building, though, and says nothing about the European TV audience the games are built for.

Todd Boehly's Eldridge leads strategic investment in youth sports brand Overtime

Todd Boehly's Eldridge leads strategic investment in youth sports brand Overtime

Youth sports media company Overtime raised an undisclosed strategic round led by Eldridge Capital Management, which manages assets for Todd Boehly’s Eldridge. The investment is expected to support content, commerce, technology and Overtime’s live sports properties. Eldridge has stakes in the Dodgers, Lakers and Sparks and has invested in Fanatics, FEVO, Fulwell Entertainment, Religion of Sports and Vivid Seats. The overlap highlights what Eldridge could offer, though no partnerships have been announced.

  • 01The new investment is expected to support Overtime's content, commerce, technology and live sports properties. Eldridge's team stakes and past sports investments suggest it could bring more than capital.
  • 02Watch for announced deals between Overtime's leagues and Eldridge-backed companies such as Fanatics, Vivid Seats or FEVO. That would show whether this is a strategic round or just another name on the investor list.

Northwestern's Ryan Field seats 35,000, the Big Ten's smallest capacity

Northwestern's new Ryan Field seats 35,000, the Big Ten's smallest capacity. The project team sells the design on proximity: no seat is more than 136 feet from the field, and 200,000 square feet of festival grounds, branded the Village, will host six Chicago food vendors.

  • 01Farthest-seat distance is a usable design benchmark: no seat at the new Ryan Field is more than 136 feet from the field, and tours use distance comparisons to sell the design.
