Retail energy companies are experiencing real pain with their billing systems — but the system itself isn't always the root cause. Mollie Gaby, Principal at CG Infinity, believes many organizations underestimate how much performance depends on collaboration between technical teams and the business. When developers truly understand retail energy operations and work closely with internal stakeholders, they can uncover gaps, implement targeted fixes, and resolve issues that have been causing frustration for months — sometimes years.

Another common blind spot is how companies manage controls and vendor relationships. Teams often continue revisiting billing problems that were already fixed, instead of shifting focus to new risks that require attention. At the same time, many organizations fail to stay actively engaged with their vendor. If vendors aren't aware of ongoing challenges, they can't recommend system upgrades or improvements that may already exist. In many cases, the answer isn't replacing the billing platform — it's using it more strategically.

Retail energy companies today are experiencing a lot of pain and frustration with their current system. Some things they may not understand that they could do to make it work better for them is that good developers can supplement issues, especially if they understand the business. And they collaborate with the business that will allow them to identify some areas, maybe put some technical solutions in place that could resolve some of the issues that you're having. There's also something that companies should look at as far as controls that they put in place. Maybe there was some billing issue that happened a year ago. It hasn't happened since then because you put a fix in place. So there's really no need to keep working that. There also could be new controls that you need to be on the lookout for. Another thing companies can do is be engaged with their vendor. The vendor can make you aware of improvements they've made. If they're not aware you're experiencing a lot of this pain, then they can't help you with that. So there may be an upgrade out there that could make your system work better for you.
