Twenty-four billion dollars to $549 billion in ten years. That is the path Global Market Insights has drawn for the IoT sensor market, a compound annual growth rate of 37.6% from 2025 to 2035, according to a report Smart Industry's Scott Achelpohl covered on July 14. GMI released the analysis in June, Smart Industry said.

The figure is a forecast, not a measurement. GMI's own numbers run from about $24 billion in 2025 to about $549 billion by 2035, according to Smart Industry. If anything close to that curve holds, the sensor is the small part of the bill; the data it throws off is what a plant's network, storage and analytics have to carry.

Two buyers behind one number: factories and public infrastructure

GMI attributes the growth to accelerating digital transformation across industries and the spread of connected technologies, which Smart Industry reads as Industry 4.0 adoption in practice. The firm also points to public infrastructure as a distinct driver, with smart projects in transportation, utilities and public safety pushing sensor deployment, according to Smart Industry.

That matters because it puts industrial plants and municipal systems in the same demand pool. A utility instrumenting substations and a food plant instrumenting compressors are, in GMI's framing, buying from the same growth curve.

The use case GMI names most concretely is predictive maintenance. Smart Industry quotes the report as saying that predictive maintenance is letting enterprises reduce operational downtime and improve asset efficiency. For a plant operations leader, that is the one line in the report tied to a measurable outcome, which arguably makes it the sensor investment easiest to defend in a capital review.

For operators whose maintenance program still runs on fixed calendar intervals, this is the part of the report that applies directly. Everything else in the forecast describes the market. The predictive maintenance line describes a decision.

GMI further argues, per Smart Industry, that the continuing rise in connected devices is making sensors a core technology for real-time data collection, automation and decision-making across industrial, commercial and public sectors. Advances in cloud computing, edge analytics and AI, the firm says, are extending what sensor networks can do and how far they scale.

Inertial and wireless sensors lead the breakdown

GMI segments the market by sensor type, Smart Industry reports. Inertial sensors, meaning accelerometers, gyroscopes and magnetometers, are widely used across consumer electronics, industrial systems, automotive platforms, wearables and drones. Wireless sensors are the next category in the breakdown, but the coverage cuts off before finishing its description of that segment.

The inertial category is worth a second look from an industrial buyer. According to Smart Industry, GMI places accelerometers, gyroscopes and magnetometers in industrial systems alongside consumer electronics, automotive platforms, wearables and drones, so the same component family serves several very different markets.

That means a maintenance team specifying vibration sensors for a retrofit is drawing on a supply chain whose volumes are set by much larger consumer and automotive markets. Whether that helps or hurts industrial pricing and lead times depends on where the consumer cycle sits, and the report as covered doesn't say. It is a reasonable question to put to a sensor vendor at the next quote.

How to read a 37.6% growth forecast

Smart Industry's item is a blog post, and it doesn't lay out GMI's methodology, segment definitions, or where an IoT sensor ends and a sensor module or gateway begins. Without those, the $549 billion figure can't be lined up directly against other firms' market sizings, and procurement teams comparing vendor decks should treat it as one house's view rather than an industry consensus.

Where the forecast does carry weight is direction. The drivers GMI names, predictive maintenance, edge analytics and AI on top of sensor data, sit alongside other pieces in Smart Industry's IIoT platforms section, which has included an article on building the architecture for self-healing factories and another on digital retrofitting of plant machines. The forecast and the trade coverage point the same way, even if the dollar figure is the part to hold loosely.

Older research backs the data-volume point. A 2023 systematic review in the journal Sensors by Hanane Allioui of ESCA Ecole de Management and Youssef Mourdi of Cadi Ayyad University, which examined 84 papers under the PRISMA method, found that IoT improves operational efficiency, decision-making, productivity and data management, but that the continuously expanding data volume creates a demand for a strong IT system able to handle all enterprise processes, and that businesses need IoT architectures designed for requirements that keep changing.

Put next to GMI's curve, that finding indicates where the real budget line sits. A sensor market growing at 37.6% a year would, if realized, mean data growing at least as fast, and the plant that adds sensors without adding the pipeline behind them is buying the cheap half of the system.

Smart Industry's Achelpohl read the report as a sign of the momentum behind digital transformation, noting that IoT sensor networks feed AI-assisted services such as predictive maintenance. For a CIO, the sensor forecast is less a hardware story than a signal of what the OT side of the house is about to send across the network boundary.

The first checkpoint arrives at the end of 2026

A ten-year forecast is hard to hold anyone to. A one-year step is not. GMI's stated base of about $24 billion in 2025 and its 37.6% compound annual rate, as reported by Smart Industry, give operators a near-term yardstick: if 2026 sensor spending does not move well above the 2025 base, the curve is already off track.

That is a number a procurement director can test over the next two quarters against sensor unit prices, quote volumes and how aggressively vendors bundle sensors with analytics. If the market is running at that pace, it could show up in those conversations before it shows up in anyone's annual report.

GMI's forecast runs to 2035. The part worth watching is the next twelve months.
