Recruiting skilled workers, particularly in specialized roles like painting and finishing, is difficult in most markets. For facilities running traditional finishing lines, a single absent employee can slow or stop production. At that staffing level, normal workforce variation- an illness, a scheduling conflict, an open position- does not translate into a significant production impact. "If somebody calls in sick, somebody else is missing, it really doesn't have a huge impact on us," he noted. That kind of resilience is difficult to achieve with chain-based conveyorized systems where feet per minute conveyors demand headcount at loading, unloading, and while painting, or the systems will largely waste energy running without product and often produce low-quality finishes.

Simplicity keeps each shift self-sufficient

Beyond raw automation, the usability of the system matters for day-to-day operations. A finishing line that requires deep institutional knowledge to operate creates fragility; if the experienced operators are unavailable, productivity suffers. Systems that are straightforward to run allow each shift to operate independently, without relying on a small group of specialists to keep things on track.
