Labor availability has become one of the most persistent operational challenges across manufacturing. Recruiting skilled workers, particularly in specialized roles like painting and finishing, is difficult in most markets. For facilities running traditional finishing lines, a single absent employee can slow or stop production. Eddie Kohler with Anchor Fabrication Wichita has been using their IntelliFinishing system for almost 10 years. He described running their lines with roughly 10 people per shift. At that staffing level, normal workforce variation- an illness, a scheduling conflict, an open position- does not translate into a significant production impact. "If somebody calls in sick, somebody else is missing, it really doesn't have a huge impact on us," he noted. That kind of resilience is difficult to achieve with chain-based conveyorized systems where feet per minute conveyors demand headcount at loading, unloading, and while painting, or the systems will largely waste energy running without product and often produce low-quality finishes.

Simplicity keeps each shift self-sufficient

Beyond raw automation, the usability of the system matters for day-to-day operations. A finishing line that requires deep institutional knowledge to operate creates fragility; if the experienced operators are unavailable, productivity suffers. Systems that are straightforward to run allow each shift to operate independently, without relying on a small group of specialists to keep things on track. Operators have described the IntelliFinishing line as simple enough that individual shifts can sustain output on their own, regardless of who is or is not on the floor that day.

For manufacturers evaluating capital investments in finishing equipment, labor resilience is increasingly part of the business case alongside throughput and quality. A system that requires fewer people, reduces dependence on hard-to-find tradespeople, and keeps each shift capable of running independently addresses a structural problem that is not going away.
