There’s no doubt that ice rinks must maintain a smooth surface, otherwise skating would be treacherous. If condensation is an issue, this is no easy task. The temperature elements of ice rinks are complex. It’s not just about keeping the ice frozen. Rather the ice has to offer the best performance, but condensation is a saboteur ice quality.

Condensation Impacts Ice Surfaces

Even though ice rinks maintain the much-needed temperatures to keep the floor frozen. As temperatures rise outside, high humidity and dew points compromise the ice. The culprit condensation becomes a problem for ice arenas because of the drips.

Most ice arena buildings have metal roofs and fiberglass insulation with a plastic liner. As humidity rises, water begins to drip from the ceiling. These drips then freeze on the surface, creating bumps and build-up. Then facility managers have to continually work to get the surface even so that it’s viable for skating. Condensation is a significant problem for ice rinks, and without the proper dehumidifying equipment, instead of skating on thin ice, it will be too thick.

Xtellio launched a two-tier telematics platform in March 2026: 32 battery-powered Xense sensors for small tools and wired Pro-Xentral devices for excavators, light towers and heaters. S. 2388, the Water Infrastructure Modernization Act of 2025, would double an EPA water tech pilot to $50 million a year through 2028.
