Building Manage Systems Not Ready To Handle High Performance Buildings

With the growing technological capabilities of green buildings, one thing has become clear– building management systems (BMS) are falling short.

While there have been small steps taken towards rectifying the need for stronger management in the last 5 years, the main issue seems to be that manufactures aren’t that great at IT problem solving. And the shift has been somewhat feeble.

So what do these management systems need to keep up with building technology?

1. Smartphone and Tablet Technology.

Most people know how to operate a smartphone OS system, and modeling a BMS after similar systems can deter issues.

2. Enhanced Integration Capabilities

From HVAC to maintenance, having a system that can do it all is a necessity.

3. Open and Secure

What good is a management system if the user can’t make choices about the maintenance and programming of the system? Making sure it’s secured is also important in a climate where anything can be hacked.

4. Data Mining

Pooling information on who is using what and when can be useful when trying to predict patterns and examine needs of a large group. It’s also critical in predictive maintenance practices.

The future of building management systems is on the rise, and by adopting some of this new technology the industry can use smart buildings to the highest of their potential.
