Using the internet as a resource is hardly new in the education space. The security of that connection is pertinent to maintaining a safe and educational environment for students and teachers. Identity Automation’s Jamie Donally and Michael Webb discuss the value and importance of cybersecurity in the education space with host Ben Thomas.

The state of identity protection in schools varies, – but one item is clear: many districts don’t have protection. Donally said that this is a matter of, “recognizing that all of us have to work together to make our school and our students safe.”

For Identity Automation, a cybersecurity company focused on the education space, security online means taking the industry standards and putting an education lens on it. Oftentimes, IT actors are not taking security in schools seriously until after an attack. According to Donally, the “Focus has been on things that aren’t going to protect their schools.” With details like user experience and ease of use of programs, online security is an afterthought for many in education right now.

On this, Webb emphasized that, “There’s gotta be a conversation at the leadership level.” Webb said security is not just about risk management but about making sure educators understand the risks in not having a secure experience. Although it takes a lot of effort and focus to balance user experience and security, Identity Automation does just that while, “Dealing with a lot of different constituencies which come with different needs” said Webb.

Considering all the ransomware attacks that have plagued schools, cybersecurity is now a hot topic of discussion in the Edtech space. Donally encouraged this conversation to continue into the classroom with digital citizenship classes as a “foundational skill.”

And to ensure those in the classroom are safe, it’s pertinent that schools work together with trusted partners on the issue. For more information on Identity Automation visit their website.
