Over the past several years, commercial audio codec products have improved and expanded their reach, especially within the radio broadcasting industry. As many radio broadcasting stations continue their transition from T1 links to IP networking, taking advantage of connections that are more reliable and lower cost, the consensus has been positive on IP networks’ power to transmit high quality voice, audio, or video data.

On today’s podcast, we hear from Keyur Parikh, Vice President & General Manager of the Intraplex Business Unit at GatesAir, drawing from his extensive background in IP networking to help educate broadcast professionals on the challenges of using IP WANs and how to overcome them.

Parikh has a long and storied history in the industry; he’s created award-winning products between 2012 and 2018 that have helped move the radio broadcast industry from T1 to IP, focusing on synchronization and reliability. In an industry like radio, not known for its technological innovations, anything to help lower costs and bring more reliable internet connections and networking capabilities is more than just an upgrade; it’s survival.

Radio stations are now able to use multiple networks with specialized gateways; where as many customers previously employed dual networks, using microwave networks and MPLS with a hard switch, IP technology is letting stations use both networks and get a detailed “hit list” when there is a failure in one of the connections.

Listen to this episode to hear Parikh explain how IP WANs can be utilized to revolutionize the radio industry, what made T1 links reliable and the standard for so long, and how producers should adapt to this new and soon-to-be standardized technology.
