Hospitality Technology reported that hotels are losing a measurable share of direct bookings to third-party sites that bid on a property's own brand name in search results, intercepting guests before they reach the hotel's own checkout page. The outlet cited Operto research indicating that a competing ad appears on about three-quarters of branded hotel searches, with an average of nine such sites bidding on any given hotel's name, and that roughly 8% of direct bookings are lost this way.
Why the leakage is hard to see
According to Hospitality Technology, these bookings still result in a real reservation, but the guest reaches it through a lookalike site rather than the hotel's own site. Because the reservation is then recorded in property management system reports as ordinary third-party or OTA business, it can be indistinguishable from bookings that a distribution partner genuinely originated, the outlet reported. That makes it difficult for hotels to separate demand they already created from demand that a partner brought in.
Choice Hotels and Hilton diverge on Google AI Mode
Separately, Hospitality Technology reported that Choice Hotels and Hilton have each expanded their presence inside Google's AI Mode in Search, but with different approaches to where a booking is finalized. Choice Hotels announced that guests can complete a reservation directly inside Google using Google Pay, without leaving Google's interface. Hilton's integration, which also extends to ChatGPT and Claude, allows guests to search and compare using natural language and loyalty points, but redirects them to Hilton.com to complete the booking, according to Hilton's own announcement cited by the outlet.
A new intelligence platform for independent hotels
Hotel Technology News reported on September 7, 2026, that Brand Atelier Studio introduced a Strategic Intelligence platform aimed at independent hotels, designed to combine data from property management systems, booking engines, CRM platforms, and web analytics into a single layer intended to support commercial decisions. According to the outlet, the platform is built around business questions such as OTA dependency and channel economics rather than functioning as an additional dashboard.
What hotels can check
Hospitality Technology suggested that hotels can get an initial read on their exposure by searching their own name, distinguishing authorized booking partners from unfamiliar sites bidding on the brand, and comparing the results against their own channel mix reports.
