Construction telematics grew up around heavy equipment, and smaller assets such as hand tools and portable heaters were largely left out. Xtellio is going after that gap with a platform that pairs battery-powered Bluetooth sensors for small assets and non-powered tools with wired devices for powered equipment such as excavators and industrial heaters, all feeding the same cloud platform.
The Danish firm launched the system in March 2026, Equipment World's Don McLoud reported. It ships with 32 rugged, plug-and-play, battery-powered sensors called Xenses, built for smaller assets and non-powered tools, which send data to Xtellio's cloud through gateways called Xentrals. Xtellio puts the Xense battery life at 10 years.
That last number is the one to remember. Tagging a few hundred hand tools, compaction plates and heaters is only practical if nobody has to go back and change batteries, and a decade-long claim, if it holds up in the field, turns small-asset tracking from a maintenance program into a one-time install.
Two layers of hardware, one data platform
Construction Equipment's Frank Raczon, writing in April 2026, described the portfolio in more detail. The Xenses are compact Bluetooth devices that mount on small fleet assets and tools. The Xentral gateways can run as standalone sensors or be paired with Xenses to add machine data, according to Equipment World.
Above that sits the Pro-Xentral series, a range of wired telematics devices that connect directly to powered equipment. Construction Equipment listed three variants, Standard, CANbus and a recently announced Heat IQ, and named the target machines: excavators, dozers, skid steers, boom lifts, light towers and industrial heaters. These units pull engine hours, diagnostics and status data for analysis and management.
The two outlets differ slightly on one count. Equipment World put the Xense lineup at 32 sensors; Construction Equipment said more than 32. The gap is small and probably reflects a month's difference in reporting, but it suggests the catalog is still growing.
The architecture matters for a fleet manager who has been running two tracking regimes: OEM or aftermarket telematics on the yellow iron, and a spreadsheet, or nothing, for everything smaller. According to Construction Equipment, the platform supports installation across both wired and wireless equipment categories, capturing and forwarding data from mixed fleets of large equipment, wired equipment, smaller assets and tools.
Data goes where the customer sends it
Xtellio delivers data through open APIs so it can connect to a customer's existing business systems, Construction Equipment reported, and the company frames the result as full customer ownership and control of the data. It calls the concept data liberation. CEO Tom Valbak Aardestrup told the publication that customers can build their own front ends and dashboards, and that with AI reshaping software, the value comes down to the data itself, which Xtellio wants to be the origin point for.
Valbak also argued, per Construction Equipment, that organizations of any size that control their own data across every asset category will operate faster and more efficiently. That's a vendor's thesis, not a measured result. But it does hand buyers a specific thing to ask for.

Here is what the coverage does not settle. Neither outlet describes how data would be exported to a competing telematics platform, what the APIs expose, or whether historical data leaves with the customer if they switch providers. For a procurement lead writing a telematics contract, those are the questions the open-API language invites, and they belong in the RFP rather than in assumptions.
Valbak framed the launch as a step beyond the model that took hold in the early 2000s, when telematics in construction centered almost entirely on heavy equipment, according to both Equipment World and Construction Equipment. The claim that the jobsite's smaller assets are the next frontier is consistent with what else has moved in the category this year.
Attachments and small assets are drawing attention across the category
Xtellio is not alone in reaching below the engine. Equipment World's telematics coverage in May 2026 reported that Hitachi added attachment monitoring and tracking, along with machine data-sharing features, to its Landcros Connect fleet management system, aimed at contractors and rental companies. In August, the same outlet covered Tenna's launch of Asset Financials, software that uses telematics activity to assign equipment costs to specific jobs and cost codes.
Read together, these indicate a category widening its scope in two directions at once: toward assets that never had a data port, and toward tying machine activity to money. Xtellio's launch sits squarely in the first direction, and its open-API stance is what would let its data feed the second.
For an operator whose losses and idle time concentrate in the small stuff, the trench compactors that walk off, the heaters that run all weekend, the light towers nobody remembers to shut down, this is the part of the market that has been waiting for hardware cheap enough and durable enough to bother with. Whether Xtellio's pricing clears that bar is not something either publication reported.
Who it is for, and what is still unknown
Xtellio named rental and construction companies as its intended customers, Construction Equipment reported, describing the goal as reliable visibility across fleets, machines and jobsites, with customers deciding where the data delivers the most value. The company was founded in 2005 by engineers, per the same outlet.
The dual customer base raises a practical wrinkle the published coverage leaves open. When a rental house tags a heater with a Xense and rents it to a contractor, the reporting does not say who sees the data, who pays for the connectivity, or how ownership is split. For rental fleets weighing the platform, that arrangement would matter as much as the hardware spec.
What the sources do establish is narrower and still useful. There is a shipping product with two hardware tiers, a stated 10-year battery figure for the wireless tier, a named list of powered equipment types the wired tier supports, and a public commitment to open APIs. A fleet manager can test each of those claims on a handful of assets before committing to a yard full.
The Heat IQ variant, the newest of the Pro-Xentral units, targets industrial heaters specifically. With the heating season a few weeks out, that is the device most likely to show up on a jobsite first.
