A drone lifted off from a box on Shell's Mars floating production unit in the US Gulf, and it did so under an aviation approval that no other operator in the region holds. The Journal of Petroleum Technology reported on September 11, 2026, that Shell has demonstrated drone-in-a-box operations from Mars. According to JPT, Shell is also the only operator in the region so far to hold FAA clearance to sign off on its own offshore flights beyond visual line of sight. Jennifer Pallanich, JPT's Senior Technology Editor, watched the system work at Shell Technology Center Houston. JPT labelled the piece an exclusive and filed it under its Inspection/maintenance topic; it also appears on the publication's Data & Analytics topic page.
That is a short summary carrying a large operational change. Beyond visual line of sight, BVLOS in the trade, is the line that separates a pilot on deck watching the aircraft from a system that flies where nobody on the platform can see it. According to JPT, Pallanich saw the system in action at Shell Technology Center Houston, so the viewing the publication describes took place onshore, while the operations it reports are from Mars.
For an asset integrity lead responsible for inspection campaigns on a deepwater production unit, the useful part is the regulatory precedent. Until now, routine offshore BVLOS under an operator's own approval was a question of whether the FAA would allow it in the Gulf. JPT's report indicates it has, for one operator, which changes the question for everyone else to how, and under what conditions.
For operators with floating production units in the US Gulf whose inspection plans still depend on sending people to the structure, that precedent could matter sooner than any hardware decision. The person who plans those campaigns now has a named peer to point to. The person who signs off on aviation risk has a named regulatory pathway to ask about.

That pairing suggests how the Shell development is likely to be judged inside the industry. The drone flies itself. The decision about what its pictures mean still doesn't, and the people JPT quoted this month were explicit that engineering judgment stays in the loop.

From 'emerging trend' to a drone on a platform
The caution has a documented history. A review article in the journal Petroleum, published in December 2020 by Mehdi Mohammadpoor and Farshid Torabi, described big data analytics in oil and gas as an emerging trend and listed inspection-adjacent uses such as improved asset management and occupational safety among its applications. The same review attributed slow uptake mainly to a lack of business support and awareness inside the industry, and separately flagged data quality and understanding the complexity of the problem as challenges. The paper appeared in Volume 6, Issue 4, at pages 321 to 328, as an open-access review with peer review under the responsibility of Southwest Petroleum University.
The authors defined big data by six characteristics: volume, variety, velocity, veracity, value and complexity. They wrote that the arrival of data recording sensors in exploration, drilling and production had made oil and gas a massive data-intensive industry. The applications they listed ran across the business:
- Analyzing seismic and micro-seismic data
- Improving reservoir characterization and simulation
- Reducing drilling time and increasing drilling safety
- Optimizing the performance of production pumps
- Improved petrochemical asset management
- Improved shipping and transportation
- Improved occupational safety
A docked drone making routine offshore flights is, among other things, a data-volume problem. Whether the imagery it collects gets used well could depend on exactly the issues that review named years ago, which is why the September panel discussions about AI usefulness are the relevant companion to the Mars news rather than a contradiction of it.
Who gets the second approval
Shell is first in the region. JPT's report does not name a second, and the summary does not say whether the approval Shell secured is a pathway other Gulf operators can follow on comparable terms. That is the specific thing to watch: another operator securing self-approved offshore BVLOS authority would confirm this is a route, and its absence over the coming months would suggest it is, for now, a Shell-specific arrangement.
