If you’re not from Texas, you might not know just how important football is. Every type of football in Texas, from high school to college to professional, plays a vital, cultural role in the state. In fact, there’s even been an Emmy-award winning show on the matter. But how has football shaped one man and how has one-man shaped others in return?
In the latest episode of #WintheDay, host Chase Wasson speaks to a man of many names – Dad, 8x Texas High School state championship Coach, and “Silver Fox,” Hal Wasson.
Recently retired as one of the Top Ten all-time winningest Coach in Texas, Wasson discusses the importance of his family’s early impact on his development and mentality. Throughout his youth, his family was instrumental in expanding and strengthening his passions and ambitions. This continued into his career as a Texas high school football coach, where sacrifices played a crucial step in leading his team to success. His success and sacrifice tied into each other and allowed him to spend every day at work loving what he did, ultimately leading him to where he is today which is a highly renowned coach and father.
“I was very fortunate to have a family that supported me. I was very fortunate to have a wife that supported me in my endeavors. I was very fortunate to have you and your sister that totally supported me,” Coach Wasson reflected.

“You have to practice what you preach. I always tell people, it’s faith, family, football. That doesn’t change and it won’t change with me,” said Coach Wasson. After spending 43 seasons on the field as a coach within the Texas high school system (33 of which as head coach), Coach Wasson put up his helmet and retired from the field – both as a Coach and as Corsicana ISD’s Athletic Director. Coach Wasson has served as a Coach, leader, role model, and mentor throughout his career, earning over 250 wins during his time.
