The Biden administration continues to lay out some of its early priorities for 2021 and has given some direction on how it plans to approach its COVID-19 response in terms of support for the educational system.

Reporting out of ABC News said that, during its first week in office, the Biden administration announced a multi-layered strategy for responding to the pandemic, focusing specifically on mitigation measures to get students back into the classroom.

The goal is to fully reopen a majority of schools within the first 100 days of Biden’s presidency, but the strategy, in part, relies on Congress forking over $130 billion for a focused response plan.

The funding will be used for “implementing regular COVID-19 testing, addressing transportation and ventilation needs, providing PPE hiring more teachers to reduce class sizes to allow for social distancing, hiring nurses, providing more counselors to address students’ social and emotional needs, and providing additional learning supports for students.”

It also requires the federal government to provide “reliable access to supplies like masks and sanitizing products.”

On top of that, a study released this week by the CDC pointed to what has already been working for schools that are already in the process of reopening and identified that, when schools are strategic with their mitigation strategies, implementing mask requirements and other PPE and cleaning measures, COVID-19 has a limited spread.
