In 2021, Detmar Logistics was named one of Heavy Duty Trucking’s Top Ten Green Fleets. This distinction is a point of pride for Detmar, whose laser focus on sustainability is essential for future generations. Matt Detmar, CEO of Detmar Logistics, sat down with Drive Clean’s Lynn Lyon to share Detmar’s mission to become a fully electrified trucking fleet by 2026.

While Detmar said his company was honored to receive the Top Ten Green Fleet distinction, they were still early on in their transition to alternative fuels and electrification. “We still have a lot more to go, and we sure hope and plan to stay on that list for years to come in what our goals are.”

Contrary to what some might think Detmar said, the oil & gas industry fully supports his company’s approach towards greening their fleet. Detmar said it was opening doors for them that were previously closed.

To make their electric fleet a reality, Detmar partnered with Hyliion in San Antonio, TX. Hyliion provides natural gas and electric hybrid-fueled trucking solutions. In addition, Hyliion’s proprietary battery management system supports all Li-Ion chemistries for both hybrid and fully electric vehicle requirements.

“We chose to go with Hyliion because of their unique approach to electrification,” Detmar said. “The idea of a fully electric truck with a small battery pack and a natural gas power plant on board to keep those batteries charged, which is essentially the Hypertruck ERX, makes sense to us for multiple reasons.”

The CNG (compressed natural gas) power source provides continual charging to the truck’s battery, which allows for a smaller-sized battery that allows Detmar’s fleet to run heavier loads with fewer stops for natural gas refueling. Detmar likes where the technology is headed and looks forward to rolling out more Hyliion Hypertrucks in the future.
