To overcome barriers and make electric vehicles the majority mode of transportation, everyone knows that reliable EV charging solutions are critical for success. The word out of CES 2024 is, challenge accepted.

ABB E-mobility is making significant strides in the EV charging sector, as showcased at CES 2024. They have announced a strategic R&D cooperation with MAN Truck & Bus, focusing on developing innovative charging solutions like the Megawatt Charging System (MCS) for heavy goods and passenger transport. Emphasizing the need for reliable, adaptable, and efficient charging solutions, ABB E-mobility is addressing the challenges of the evolving EV ecosystem with tailored solutions for different use cases, including fleet, on-the-go, and destination charging, aiming to revolutionize the electric mobility landscape.

How can the electric vehicle (EV) charging experience be elevated to match platforms like Spotify or TurboTax's seamless and intuitive user experiences?

John-Rhys Newman, the Head of Design and User Experience at ABB E-mobility spoke at CES 2024 on ABB's dedication to enhancing the user experience in EV charging.

"Are you able to just guide people through a charging process and experience as simple as using an iOS device or an iPad or Spotify, for example?" Newman said. "My level of quality and efficiency is pretty high. And so, we're pushing on addressing those pain points within the charging experience and also bringing to light and usability to that."

Think a measure of success for me and for my team and for ABB now is getting to a point where EV charging simply work. And my level of expectation is that it works as well as Spotify and it works as well as TurboTax. And that's not yet where we're at as an in Street. Hello. My name is Reese Newman, and I am the head of design and user experience at ABB Mobility. I've been with the company for four months now. Essentially, my task is to build design and user experience as a competency within ABB mobility. And my priority really beyond just building a design team now, building a user experience team is to build an elevated user experience for echarging. Essentially, I come from a consumer electronics background. I worked at Google. I worked for Macia. I worked for Lego, and I've prioritized users and user experience throughout my career. And what I see within the mobility space essentially is an opportunity to elevate user experience. What I know and what we is consumers and users, do is we we have a very high sensitivity for great user experience, whether it's in car, whether it's a watch, whether it's air flight, whether it's travel, whether it's your doing TurboTax, whether it's using Spotify, an iOS device, general public and essentially have a very good understanding of great user experience. What I see within the e mobility space is an opportunity to elevate. So essentially we're building not only a team to push on that, but understand the pain points of user experience within the mobility space, but now also elevate that to the level that I would expect than customers would expect. So one of the things we've been doing in the last four to six months is really identifying find where those pinpoints are within EV charging from the user experience point of view. And sometimes they sound super simple, but they're really important. Essentially, simple things like where is a charger? How do I know it's available? Is it working? What kilowatt charge do I need for my car? Is a very simple starting points where we can design and develop a great user experience. Beyond that, it's about providing information about charging rates, level of clarity, a level of signaling. Are you able to just guide people through a charging process and experience simple as using an iOS device or an iPad or Spotify, for example. My level of quality and efficiency is pretty high. And so we're pushing on addressing those pain points within the charging experience and also bringing to light and usability to that. Think one of the most exciting opportunities for me as a designer and leading designer user experience ABB is that we're a point of transfer that's a transformation in the business, and a transformation in the industry wide. And so I think elevating the design and user experience, but also having an unity to design entirely new range of products from scratch, where we elevate user experience and design from the outset. Not only a function, part of the decision making process, but it's a priority and a point of view for us moving forward as a brand. I think A measure of success for me and for my team and for ABB now is getting to a point where EV charging simply works. And my level of expectation is it works as well as Spotify and it works as well as TurboTax. And that's not yet where we're at as an industry. And so that's a priority for me. And not in addition to that, it's about building what's known within interaction and user experience interface loyalty. Normal people and normal humans and users go to interfaces and products that feel familiar because they work It feels delightful, and that's my goal and our goal for ABB mobility.

And, it’s not a bad question as so much is truly happening in this space today. What used to be trains, planes, and automobiles is now robots, drones, and spaceships, and Grant is curious about how soon we are all going to see these technologies in action, at scale. Very few of us enjoy a car that drives itself, have dinner delivered via drone, or have taken a vacation to space, but these amazing technologies and applications, as Grant discovers within his "Are We There Yet?" podcast series, are here, or as he likes to say, "we're there"! Dot Transportation is testing software that predicts driver fatigue before a shift starts

Dot Transportation is testing software that predicts driver fatigue before a shift starts

Dot Transportation is piloting Fatigue Science's Readi platform, which gives drivers hour-by-hour fatigue predictions before a shift, FleetOwner reported Sept. 16, 2026. The trial moves fatigue management from in-cab alerts to pre-dispatch planning. It lands as ATRI opens benefit-cost research on hours-of-service and ELD rules.

  • 01A fatigue forecast delivered before dispatch is a planning input; an in-cab drowsiness alert arrives after the risk is already on the road. That timing difference is the feature to evaluate in any predictive fatigue pilot.
  • 02Research in Production and Operations Management found ELD mandates closed an hours-of-service compliance gap between drivers, a reminder that logged hours and actual alertness are different measurements.
  • 03Two signals to watch: whether Dot Transportation publishes pilot results, and whether ATRI's new benefit-cost research on HOS and ELD rules changes how fleets justify fatigue tools beyond compliance.

International and PlusAI are building Level 4 trucks around NVIDIA's Thor chip

International and PlusAI are building Level 4 trucks around NVIDIA's Thor chip

International Motors and PlusAI are building factory-installed Level 4 trucks on NVIDIA's DRIVE AGX Hyperion platform and Thor chip, Fleet Owner reported. Nauto CEO Stefan Heck told Heavy Duty Trucking the harder job is proving safety across hundreds of billions of real miles. Early runs will stick to corridors like Interstate 10.

  • 01Even at Stefan Heck's top projection of 200,000 self-driving vehicles within two years, autonomous systems will still represent only a small fraction of the market for years compared to the roughly 12 million trucks operating in the US, according to Heavy Duty Trucking.
  • 02The sharper question to put to any Level 4 vendor is which corridors it can document as validated with real miles, since Heck argues simulation only covers scenarios engineers have already imagined.
  • 03Grote's 4SEE Digital Harness brings lamp-specific fault reporting and over-the-air updates to the trailer, a spec item fleets can write now regardless of when the tractor drives itself.

Separately, a January 2025 World Economic Forum essay and a November 2024 Computers in Industry literature review addressed AI in supply chains and supply chain management research more broadly, without directly addressing freight rate-setting.

  • 01Averitt described its Averitt Connect TMS and ExactRate dynamic pricing tool in a March 23, 2026 podcast episode.
  • 02A January 2025 WEF essay discussed AI's role in supply chain resilience but did not address freight pricing.
  • 03A November 2024 Computers in Industry review found AI-in-SCM research is subject to hype and implementation challenges.
