AV over IP
AV over IP is the distribution of audio and video signals over standard Ethernet networks instead of dedicated point-to-point cabling. It makes routing software-defined and lets AV systems scale with network infrastructure.
The shift to AV over IP merged AV and IT: bandwidth planning, multicast configuration, and network security are now core AV skills. Standards and ecosystems such as SDVoE, Dante AV, and IPMX compete on latency, quality, and interoperability.
In practice
AV over IP is increasingly utilized by AV integrators, IT managers, and content creators to streamline media distribution in diverse environments, from corporate offices to live events. It drives critical decisions regarding equipment selection, network architecture, and scalability, allowing for flexible installations and easier updates. Commercially, it reduces infrastructure costs, minimizes downtime, and enhances collaboration by enabling multiple users to access content simultaneously, ultimately improving a company's operational efficiency and return on investment.
