Where to Find the Hidden Nuggets of Energy Savings

When funding a healthy building project, finding additional savings wherever possible is always welcomed. Do hidden nuggets of energy savings assist? That was the question posed to Dean Smith, Controls Specialist at Boland, and he had some good news for building owners.

The starting point for savings begins with the client’s goals. With so many variables in what a client might want to get out of their building, saving money may only be part of their goal, so it is essential to understand their needs to solve their challenges appropriately. And, once the objectives are in sight, Smith said it is time to find the solutions to achieve them.

“The key to it all is, once you understand where a client wants to go with their building, that drives what systems you can manipulate,” Smith said. “If they’re concerned about air quality, if they’re concerned about temperature or continuity of operations, you really can’t do much to risk those things. The driver of everything we do depends on what the customer is looking to do. But often, they don’t know how to go about it.”

Automation and control systems are one possible nugget in the energy savings equation.

“The highlight is we get to see as control techs what the building is doing when nobody’s looking,” Smith said. “Most people understand if they’re hot or they’re cold or if the air’s not flowing. But they don’t understand or don’t really know that they might have two different systems running at the same time that are fighting each other. And we get to find that stuff for them and bring it to their attention – and the associated cost savings with it.”
