What happens when you combine half a century of CT imaging technology development with the most advanced threat detection software? If you guessed cutting-edge airport security, you are correct. Analogic’s newest security solution, ConneCT Checkpoint Security System is shaking up the industry and transforming the checkpoint space. The technology used in CT imaging for medical purposes has been employed by Analogic to make some important changes in airport screening processes. With current airport devices pushing a decade old, this change is a long time coming and will likely be embraced by passengers whose patience has been wearing increasingly thin over long wait times.

Computerized Tomography, or CT, is technology that converts X-ray energy to digital signals for image reconstruction. Analogic’s devices take millions of data sets and uses powerful algorithms to distinguish innocent materials from hazardous ones.

The machines offer advanced rotational CT technology that cuts through clutter and produces sharper images than the current machines used at airports. This means the airlines can spot items they could not spot before. The device lets screeners view side by side 3D images that they can zoom on a touch screen and even spin a bag for a full 360-degree view. Designed to trigger an alert when plastic or liquid explosives are suspected, the technology address what has been one of the greatest weaknesses of current imaging in use.

The advantages of this innovation are multiple. In addition to heightened safety, it will reduce wait times. It allows passengers to board without removing electronics and liquids from their bags. The technology will integrate seamlessly with smart lane systems and meet the highest EU and TSA standards. It provides all this without increasing radiation exposure for passengers or screening staff.

The TSA announced last week that it will soon begin testing this technology for carry-on bags with American Airlines at New York’s JFK airport.
