Denver’s fire fleet team has put a clear target on apparatus procurement in 2026: an order that, per Fire Engineering, comes with a 10 to 12 month delivery timeframe from Spartan.

The Denver Fire Department ordered three Spartan Emergency Response S-180 custom pumpers that Spartan says will be delivered in 10 to 12 months, according to Fire Engineering. The department described the purchase as a fleet update tied to continued growth in the city, and Fire Engineering reported that this is Denver’s first purchase of Spartan apparatus.

The operational takeaway is the lead time and the factors Denver weighed alongside specifications and maintainability. Fire Engineering reported the order is for three pumpers and highlighted the 10 to 12 month delivery timeline as one of the considerations.

Lead time shows up in the specification

Fire Engineering reported that Denver weighed several factors: the 10 to 12 month lead time, a foam system upgrade, a 2,000-gpm pump, improved chassis access, and better maneuverability. According to Fire Engineering, the S-180 package Denver chose pairs a Spartan Metro Star chassis with a Cummins X12 rated at 450 hp, a Waterous CSU pump delivering 2,000 gpm, and a 500-gallon tank, plus low hosebeds and a high side/low side storage configuration.

Those details matter because they map to constraints fleet managers can quantify, including pump capacity, tank capacity, and the service access around the drivetrain and chassis. Fire Engineering also reported that Denver cited the 10 to 12 month lead time among the factors it considered in selecting the apparatus.

When a department points to a 10 to 12 month build window as part of its decision, the delivery timeline becomes part of what is being purchased, not just a scheduling footnote.

Spartan positions the S-180 as a modular design intended to cut engineering and manufacturing time by using common configurations while still allowing tailoring, and says departments can receive a pumper within 12 months in many cases, according to Fire Engineering. For procurement teams, that approach can mean fewer unique engineering changes to manage during the build.

What Denver’s committee process shows about acceptance risk

Before placing the order, Denver mechanics and apparatus committee members tested a demo pumper and evaluated workmanship and drive performance, Fire Engineering reported. That kind of hands-on review ahead of the award can help limit issues that otherwise surface at delivery and acceptance.

Fire Engineering also reported that the department emphasized similarity to its current fleet. In practice, closer alignment with existing apparatus can reduce change management, including training time and SOP updates, before a new rig is placed into daily service.

Fire Apparatus and Emergency Equipment also carried the Denver order in its Industry News feed, similarly describing the purchase as a fleet update connected to city growth rather than a trial of a new platform.

PPE decon is being purchased as installed equipment

Apparatus is only part of the 2026 capex and opex picture. Health-and-safety programs also show up as installed equipment that affects station space, utilities, and ongoing upkeep.

Rescue Intellitech AB, a Sandberg Development Group company, appointed Beatrice Råvik Janzon CEO effective Aug. 10, 2026, according to Fire Apparatus and Emergency Equipment. The outlet said she has more than 20 years in product management, global business development, and commercial strategy, with past roles at Thule Group and Sony.

Rescue Intellitech’s lineup includes the Solo Rescue decon washer, which the company markets for reducing carcinogens in firefighters’ personal protective equipment, Fire Apparatus and Emergency Equipment reported. Operationally, that category of equipment can turn PPE cleaning into a defined station workflow supported by fixed assets and ongoing service needs.

Station facility planning can intersect with fleet and PPE programs.

Where to pressure-test bids and programs in 2026

A shared theme across the Denver pumper purchase and Rescue Intellitech’s leadership update is that both items center on procurement and operations decisions reported in the trade press, including delivery timelines for apparatus and PPE decon equipment positioned around health and safety needs.

  • In apparatus RFPs, require bidders to provide a firm “in-service by” date linked to acceptance testing and upfit milestones, and score that commitment directly.
  • During demos, request a maintenance access walkthrough before the award, not afterward. Denver cited how easy it was to reach the chassis as a deciding factor, and that can be converted into measurable serviceability criteria (clearances, filter access, daily check points) instead of a subjective preference, per Fire Engineering’s report.
  • If PPE decon equipment is being added or expanded, manage it as a facility asset: verify utility needs, consumables, preventive maintenance intervals, and expected service response before rollout.
