As the world marches toward a return to business as usual – or some approximation of it – myriad questions linger about what office spaces will look like as a potential “new normal” dawns. In some ways, the world’s workforces and workspaces may be better prepared than you think.

Regarding the technological landscape of the new normal, advances in air filtration, touchless devices and integration, antimicrobial surfaces and materials, videoconferencing, wireless collaboration tools, and more can facilitate adherence to social distancing measures and other best practices for keeping employees and guests healthy and safe. However, there will also likely need to be some drastic shifts in the way modern employers and employees think about the workplace.

For years, open, collaborative spaces have gained in popularity, allowing for better perceived interaction and flexibility. But, in the wake of this uncertain period, a return to segmented workspaces and barriers could be in the works. It could even have an impact on seemingly insignificant details. Does a desk full of knick-knacks make it more difficult for custodial crews to keep up with more rigorous cleaning schedules? It’s certainly possible.

Even office roles could change. Certain employees will likely be tasked with ensuring their colleagues are following preventative measures, and new positions could even emerge in an effort to ensure operations are as prepared as possible for future disruptions of this magnitude.
