Graphisoft Outlines Open BIM Layer and AI Design Platform

Graphisoft, part of the Nemetschek Group, has outlined two initiatives under development as part of what it calls its Design Intelligence strategy, according to a Batinfo report on the company's announcement. One is a collaboration layer intended to work across Nemetschek Group products under the Open BIM approach. The other is a separate, browser-based platform aimed at using artificial intelligence to assist early-stage design decisions.

What the collaboration layer is meant to do

According to Batinfo, Graphisoft describes the collaboration initiative as an effort to keep models, documents, issue records, and decisions aligned between Graphisoft's own products and other Nemetschek Group solutions. The company says the environment is meant to support open file standards including IFC and BCF, alongside common formats such as PDF, DWG, and RVT. Batinfo reports the initiative will be browser-based and intended for multiple types of project stakeholders, including architects, engineers, contractors, owners, and operators. Early access is planned for 2026, according to the report.

Batinfo also reports that Graphisoft cited industry research indicating that a majority of construction projects experience significant delays and budget changes, with global losses estimated in the trillions of dollars annually. Graphisoft has framed its coordination effort as a response to that pattern, though the company has not yet released the collaboration product for broader use, and its effectiveness has not been independently verified.

The separate AI-assisted design platform

Batinfo reports that Graphisoft is also developing a separate web-based platform intended to pair AI tools with simulation features, aimed at helping design teams evaluate options earlier in a project. According to the report, the company says users would be able to review a large number of volume, layout, and performance scenarios within a shared browser workspace, without needing BIM expertise. Batinfo reports this platform is scheduled for early access starting in October.

Separately, a 2021 profile of Archicad in Interior Design described features that make design changes visible to project teams in near real time, and included an account from a structural engineer describing how the software flagged conflicts such as beams not fitting available space or duct routing issues in masonry walls. That article predates the initiatives described in the Batinfo report and reflects Archicad's existing collaboration and clash-detection capabilities rather than the newly announced platforms.

What remains unclear

Both initiatives described by Batinfo are still in development, and Graphisoft has not published detailed technical specifications, pricing, or independent performance data for either the collaboration layer or the AI design platform. Firms evaluating BIM and design software this year may want to track the announced early access timelines, but decisions about adoption would depend on details not yet made public.
