IN NED’S OWN WORDS

With the onslaught of online sales, people needed to change, and they needed to do it with new technology, because the old ways weren’t working

Ned HillOn adapting package collection to the growth of online shopping.
IN NED’S OWN WORDS

A customer doesn't care what technology is. It just needs to be simple and intuitive.

Ned HillOn designing a customer experience around ease of use, in Intelligent Logistics.

THE LEAD IDEA

The delivery still has a final handoff

Ned Hill with Tyler Kern · MarketScale Retail

Ned describes the friction after a parcel reaches a building: someone still has to locate it and get it to the recipient. Smart Package Room and iPickup use computer vision with light, laser and audio guidance to support collection. In retail, the aim includes freeing an associate to help another customer.

Discussion prompt

How long does collection take after the parcel has already arrived?

02FROM THE CONVERSATION

Make the funding case specific to the business

Ned Hill and David Byrne on Intelligent Logistics

Discussing Position Imaging’s $30 million venture-debt financing, Ned points to intellectual property and prospective cash flow. David Byrne adds the need for a specific business plan. Their conversation explains the circumstances behind one company’s decision and the importance of choosing partners suited to it.

Discussion prompt

Which assets and business assumptions explain why this financing route fits the company?

03FROM THE CONVERSATION

Find a recurring problem that the technology can solve

Ned Hill · 2023 Multifamily Innovation Awards

In his award acceptance, Ned describes early difficulty winning adoption for tracking technology and the subsequent focus on multifamily package management. An everyday collection problem gave the technology a clear application. He credits the team that turned that focus into Smart Package Room.

Discussion prompt

Where is the problem frequent enough that people will change how they work?

04FROM THE CONVERSATION

A faster pickup can give customers time to browse

Ned Hill with Hilary Kennedy · Intelligent Logistics, 2021

Ned expected a pickup point at the back of a store to encourage extra shopping. In a Tractor Supply pilot, the retailer placed it at the front. He reports that customers appreciated the easy collection and some chose to use the time saved to browse. The example challenges the assumption that making people walk farther creates the better shopping experience.

Discussion prompt

Does the layout save the customer time, or mainly try to hold their attention?

AWAY FROM THE JOB TITLE

Beyond the job title.

HOW IT STARTED

First, a dog that would not stay put.

Before package rooms, Ned was trying to keep his dog from escaping. That problem led to an early wireless-fence venture. When his plans for growing that business diverged from his investors’, he left and founded Position Imaging in 2006. The application changed; the interest in knowing where things are stayed.

A LESSON FROM BUILDING

Learning the engineering, too.

Early on, Ned left the technical discussions to others and thought of himself as the “idea guy.” He later called that a mistake. Becoming better versed in how the product worked became part of his approach to running the company.

Ned accepting Position Imaging’s innovation award.

Ned Hill founded Position Imaging in 2006 after an earlier venture in wireless dog-fence technology. His interest in tracking began with a dog that kept escaping; it later led to Smart Package Room and iPickup, systems that help people collect deliveries in residential buildings and retail settings. An economics graduate, Ned says he had to stop leaving the technical discussions to others and learn more of how his products worked.

In his interviews, Ned connects product decisions with the realities of building a company. Discussing package collection, he explains why rising online sales required a different approach to fulfillment. In a financing conversation with David Byrne, he gets into the limits of venture debt and the role of intellectual property and future cash flow. His 2023 award appearance recognizes Position Imaging’s team and its move into multifamily package management.

Ned is willing to revisit his own assumptions. Recalling a Tractor Supply pilot, he says he expected pickup at the back of the store to prompt more shopping. The retailer chose the front; customers valued the easier collection, and some used the time they saved to browse. It is a concrete example of the customer behavior he looks for when testing a product.
