AI is enabling logistics leaders to eliminate costly inventory inefficiencies and fundamentally reshape supply chain management strategies

How is artificial intelligence (AI) revolutionizing the logistics industry, and what this means for future supply chain management?

Craig Austin, an Associate Teaching Professor at Florida International University, sheds light on the transformative impact of AI in logistics, highlighting its potential to reshape how people manage and track inventories.

"AI artificial intelligence promises to be the most transformative of the various trends that are coming around, inventories can be better tracked and better managed, and you don't have the overstocking which costs a company’s money or the stock out which anger customers," Austin Asserts.

Hello, everyone. Any of you have might be wondering about what are some of the important trends going on in the logistics industry. One thing we learned through the pandemic was that supply chains matter. They function well. There are some significant headwinds when we look at the industry because the disruptions, for example, the Panama Canal, they have less water to draw from because of el nino. And so they have ships stacked up along the coast. Also, there's a dispute with China, which is both political and economic. And so instead of getting everything from China. We now follow a policy of China plus many where we source materials from across nations to make sure that we can get the product that we want. What is the most promising trends that are coming around without question, AI artificial intelligence promises to be the most transformative of the various trends that are coming around, inventories can be better tracked and better managed, and you don't have the overstocking which costs a company's money or the stock out which anger customers. AI also creates collaboration and data sharing that allows better visibility of goods in terms of traceability, knowing where it is, and improved demand forecasting so that you actually can plan and better. And as these things move through various shippers, suppliers, and carriers, this greatly aids mitigating supply chain risk are many, besides the disruptions that we've talked about, and offers a real time visibility. You might have noticed that Macy's Amazon and Target are also creating regional centers and also using their stores as inventory. This makes it easier for them to fulfill orders and to do it more timely. And you will also begin to see drone deliveries of products you're ordering and your pharmaceuticals because, this is very much in play. And, also, you're going to see, warehouses like Amazon, which uses Tiva robots that retrieve and fill orders that make the system faster, much more faster. And also more accurate, you're going to continue to see electric vehicles as they continue to expand on the road, and you're going to see more industries becoming better connected across between supplier and shipper and retailer and carrier. And, hopefully, you're gonna see the ocean view become fully digitized and the transit more visible, which it's not quite yet there. Biggest challenges are of course in terms of customer service. It's a common challenge for most supply chain companies, that there travel meeting their customers' needs. They want, faster response times, more empathetic interactions with staff, and they want better visibility of where their freight is. And so most supply chains are very much global in scale and they're more seamless in terms of, being across continents, but they still struggle with offering live chats. Or chat bots. And so, customers are frustrated in terms of being able to speak to the company. Also, there is simply not a common platform, where data can be shared across your network with your suppliers and your and your customers. And so, it makes it difficult to collaborate more easily and also it prevents you from being competitive and being, your supply chain being more resilient. Which it needs to be given all the disruptions going on. These are a few of my thoughts, for today. Thank you for for listening, man. Goodbye.
