Hey everybody. My name is Ashley and I'm the social media manager for Extenses. I'm excited to introduce Foundry Search. A new feature that allows designers to search for independent foundries like Toronto Design. So, welcome, Donald. Why don't you go ahead and just start by telling us a little bit about yourself? Hi, Ashley. Thank you. My name is Don Torillo, graphic designer and typeface designer. My studio practice is called Terralo Design. Aside from doing graphic design and type design, I'm a university professor father, cross country skier, aspiring chef and traveler. Okay. And I know we've spoke before and I know you do a lot of things. Tell me what are some of the things that you're currently working on right now? Here in the studio, I'm working on a few things. I'm working on a new typeface, which is going to take probably another year or two to release. It's based on jazz. It was very much inspired by music. I'm also remastering two or three of my past typefaces adding more open type features and refinements that over the years I've learned and things that I wanted to improve about were. Those are the two big things going on in the studio right now. Okay. And I know they're kind of a secret. I know you can't share too much But I love to hear about some of your your wins. What are some things that have happened maybe, I think, last year that you can share with us that you're excited about? Definitely, designing type, you make it, you know, and then you send it out in the world and it's it's You don't always know where it ends up or what happens to it. So over the past year, I've seen some things happen with my work or I've seen it appear in places that it's really been delightful to see I've seen it appear in a documentary about somebody's father that ended up on PBS -- Oh. -- photography, Stephen Dorado, a local photographer here in our city did a documentary about his father and together with another filmmaker, Soren, Soren, Soren, and it appeared there in the Motion titles, and I recently had my work appear in the posters and Motion graphics for another film. By soren sorenson on the music of Omar Sosa, a Cuban Jazz, roughly I'm probably not going to categorize his music correctly. Eclectic kind of jazz musician from Cuba. Omar so more so more so. This, you know, these films. It's really nice to see my work appear in these venues and to have some recognition. And to be bigger things. So, over the past year, those are the two big appearances of my typefaces that have really motivated me to want to go further in new directions. Got it. And thank you for sharing that with us, Donald. I like to ask you one final question. You know, entrepreneurship is huge. We're huge advocates at extensive for entrepreneurship and supporting local and small business owners. What advice would you give other typeface designers who are in this industry and just really trying to make a name for themselves. Maybe from two different points of view, I think easing into type design, it definitely helps to have had topography, courses to have courses or some background in calligraphy, as a foundation to build on. And then moving into the practice of type design. I think starting small, starting with a simple typeface that doesn't require a lot of complexity. I think that would be at least for me that's how I get into it starting with something very simple and then learning how, like, from the initial sketch to making it digital, to kerning, and everything else that's involved to produce a finished polished typeface and then making the artwork and releasing it, I think If I was to give anybody advice, especially things that I tell my students start simple with something that's easy, it'll give you a sense of accomplishment. Love that. Won't be too overwhelming. Yes. I wish I could be a fly on the wall in your classes. Because I know they're amazing. I know they're amazing. Well, I know you have to get back to it, Donald. Thank you for joining us today. We're also going to be interviewing some more of the foundries that we're partnered with, and we're so excited to have you, Donald, and I hope that you enjoy the the rest of your day. Thanks. It's great to be apart, and have a great day, you too.
