Merck's €300 million Korean plant brings biologics supplies closer to Asia-Pacific drugmakers

Merck has invested more than €300 million in a new bioprocessing production center in Daejeon, South Korea. It is the largest life science investment Merck has made in the region to date. The 44,500-square-meter facility makes cell culture media, process liquids and sterile sampling products to support biologics manufacturing from development through commercial supply.

Merck's €300 million Korean plant brings biologics supplies closer to Asia-Pacific drugmakers

Key takeaways

01

A single Asia-Pacific site now supplies both small custom pre-GMP media and commercial-scale media, so a regional biologics program could scale without switching to a source outside the region.

02

Daejeon supplies cell culture media, process liquids, ready-to-use cleaning-in-place solutions and sterile sampling products.

03

The useful supplier question has moved past whether Merck has an Asia-Pacific plant: ask which product lines ship from Daejeon and what batch traceability data customers can see.

Biologics manufacturers in Asia-Pacific now have a new regional source for the media their cells grow in. Merck's new bioprocessing production center in Daejeon, South Korea, is a 44,500-square-meter site that represents an investment of more than €300 million. It is Merck's largest life science investment in the region to date.

The plant makes the materials a biologics line uses up batch after batch: cell culture media, process liquids, cleaning solutions and sterile sampling gear. Merck is selling proximity. For anyone running supply or quality at a regional biopharma plant, the practical question is which of those materials can now come from inside the region, and at which stage of a product's life.

One site for development and commercial supply

The product list covers more ground than a typical regional warehouse. Daejeon supplies dry powder and liquid cell culture media, including small-scale, custom pre-GMP media through Merck's imMEDIAte ADVANTAGE service. The site's output also includes process liquids, cleaning-in-place solutions that arrive ready to use, and sterile sampling products for single-use processing based on the NovaSeptum Sterile Sampling System. Merck says the media and process liquids use raw materials free of animal-derived components and are made to the same global quality standards it applies across its network.

Jean-Charles Wirth, the Merck Executive Board member who runs the Life Science business, said in the announcement that reliable access to critical materials matters at every stage of biologics manufacturing. He tied Daejeon to supply confidence as customers move from development to commercial scale. CHEManager's report on the opening carries the same framing and the same product list.

The product range at Daejeon runs from pre-GMP small-scale custom media to commercial-scale supply. That suggests a developer in the region could begin with custom batches and scale up on commercial media from the same local site, without switching to a source on another continent partway through.

That would matter most for companies with programs heading toward commercial production in Asia-Pacific. The global-standards claim is what makes it work. A quality team that treats Daejeon lots as equivalent to lots made elsewhere in Merck's network is relying on that consistency, so it's the first thing worth confirming in supplier documentation.

Batch data and a plant without on-site fossil fuels

Two design choices stand out for anyone who audits suppliers. Merck says the center runs an integrated digital system that captures data automatically and traces each batch end to end, which supports quality management and regulatory compliance. Pharma Manufacturing, the trade title that covered the opening under the MilliporeSigma name, describes the systems the same way.

Ask which product lines will ship from Daejeon and what batch traceability data customers can actually see. Automated, end-to-end traceability inside the plant is most useful to a buyer's quality team when the batch history reaches them too.

The building is designed to run with no fossil fuels on site. It uses solar power, a heat-pump system, energy recovery in the air handling units and rainwater reuse to cut energy and water consumption. For biopharma companies that ask suppliers about energy use, that gives procurement a specific, documented plant design to point to rather than a corporate pledge.

Taken together, the moves indicate that Asia-Pacific now has Merck materials production in Korea and expanded biosafety testing in Singapore.

Here's the limit. Daejeon's list doesn't include filtration, which Merck ties to Blarney, and drug product testing sits in Darmstadt. The strategy localizes specific categories, not the whole catalog. A plant whose biggest Merck spend is filters or release testing gets less out of this opening than one that buys media and process liquids by the pallet.

Announced, built and open ahead of schedule

The investment is set in euros: Merck reports more than €300 million. Dollar figures differ by outlet because they are conversions. Pharma Manufacturing used $335 million and GEN used $346.5 million, so cross-outlet comparisons should use the euro figure.

The city is counting on the plant too. Daejeon Mayor Tae-Jeong Heo said the city would commit resources to linking Merck's technologies at the Daedeok Innopolis research district with local companies, universities, research institutes and hospitals, as part of a push to become a global bio hub.

Capacity is the open question. None of the reporting gives designed output or line counts for the 44,500-square-meter site. The clearest sign of how fast Daejeon fills up will be regional manufacturers saying publicly that they've qualified its media for commercial programs.

IndexBox sees replacements driving a third of quantum cascade laser shipments by 2030

IndexBox sees replacements driving a third of quantum cascade laser shipments by 2030

IndexBox projects the quantum cascade laser market to grow 8% to 12% a year through 2035, linking the outlook to faster adoption of mid-infrared spectroscopy in process control, environmental monitoring and pharmaceutical QA. It says QCLs win on high spectral brightness and room-temperature operation in compact form factors, and that the installed base of analytical instruments is growing.

  • 01Roughly one in three quantum cascade lasers shipped in 2030 is projected to replace equipment already in service, so maintenance calendars will set a growing share of demand.
  • 02For a plant or QA lab running QCL-based analyzers, the useful question is which laser maker sits inside each instrument and whether a second source exists.
  • 03Analyzers bought on a three-to-five-year cycle in 2026 come due between 2029 and 2031. Those years will show whether the forecast replacement wave turns up in real orders.

Why shared auto-injectors keep forcing rebuilt device files

Why shared auto-injectors keep forcing rebuilt device files

Vertex Knight co-founder Fubin Wu cites digitalization, personalization and large-volume delivery as trends reshaping drug delivery devices, arguing structured data can enable reuse and cut duplicated design-file work for shared auto-injectors. ISPE says no regulatory pathway exists for platform devices, and ONdrugDelivery counts 182 large-volume subcutaneous biologics, about 15% of IV and SC agents.

  • 01A device shared across drug products still triggers repeated design control work for each new combination product, and ISPE's November 2025 article says no regulatory pathway yet exists to approve a platform device.
  • 02FDA's May 2024 draft platform technology designation under section 506K is written for drug product applications, so device design files sit outside it.
  • 03Large-volume subcutaneous biologics above 2 mL numbered 182 in a January 2025 ONdrugDelivery review, about 15% of IV and SC agents; Advanced Drug Delivery Reviews reported in July 2026 that volumes up to 25 mL are now pursued.
