Cognizant announced in June 2026 the launch of a sovereign Physical AI Platform-as-a-Service built on what it calls the Cognizant Intelligence Spine, according to a company press release. The platform is designed to connect physical systems such as sensors, cameras, robots and digital twins with an agentic AI layer that reasons and acts, and Cognizant says it applies across eight sectors, including manufacturing, utilities, oil and gas, logistics, transportation, aerospace and defense, healthcare, and consumer/retail.

In September 2026 coverage by Smart Industry, Cognizant executives described the platform using the phrase 'central nervous system,' saying it is meant to let physical AI agents from different vendors share context and operate together rather than in isolated pockets. Cognizant's global head of physical AI, Vijay Narayan, and its chief AI officer for physical AI autonomy systems, Samih Fadli, discussed the platform in interviews at the company's Manufacturing Innovation Center in Chicago, according to Smart Industry. The outlet reported that Cognizant said the platform includes governance features such as audit trails, a ledger for tracking agent decisions, and configurable ethics policies, and that it is being implemented with a handful of manufacturers, utilities and automobile companies, with more in discussion, per the company.

Why integration work matters as much as the platform

A separate Smart Industry article published in September 2026 argued that technology alone does not create business value, and that value depends on integrating new tools into existing systems, operations and workflows, a role typically filled by system integrators. That piece cited McKinsey research finding that only 16% of respondents said their digital transformations had successfully improved organizational performance and sustained those improvements.

The article also referenced a Microsoft-documented case involving Sight Machine, in which AI-driven scheduling optimization was reported to reduce non-value-added production time by 75% and increase production capacity by more than 5% for a beverage manufacturer, an example used to illustrate that industrial results depend on integrating AI with real operating data, not the AI tool alone.

Smart Industry also reported in September 2026 on research commissioned by IFS and conducted by Futurum, which found that 66% of enterprises are likely to invest in AI 'digital workers' over the next 12 months, but only 10% currently run mostly autonomous AI operations. More than 75% of surveyed company leaders said they had delayed a strategic initiative because their team lacked the capacity to pursue it, according to the research.

Taken together, this reporting indicates that platforms positioned as unifying layers, like Cognizant's, are entering an environment where manufacturers already report gaps between AI ambition and their capacity to implement it. Smart Industry's coverage of system integrators suggests that the resources needed to close that gap, including data mapping, workflow design and integration maintenance, sit largely outside the platform itself and depend on the integrator or internal team executing the deployment.
