10 Minutes to a Better Building: How WELL Certified Buildings Promote Health and Well-Being

WELL building certification is an evidence-based system that measures, certifies and monitors performance features that impact the health and well-being of people who live, work and learn in buildings. Meaghan Trentacost, an Energy Performance Engineer at Boland, joined host Tyler Kern for a 10-minute dive into this vital building maintenance process.

Trentacost said the certification process began in 2014 when two brothers saw the potential in combining real estate and healthcare and founded the International WELL Building Institute. “It’s very relevant these days with COVID-19,” Trentacost said.

WELL version No. 1 covers concepts such as air, water, nourishment, light, fitness, comfort and mind. “These concepts are comprised of 105 features, including preconditions and optimizations,” Trentacost said. “Following up with that, your building can get three different types of certifications – silver, gold and platinum. To earn silver, you need to meet all the preconditions. To earn gold, you have to meet all of the preconditions and earn 40% of the applicable optimizations. And, for platinum, all the preconditions and 80% of the optimizations.”

With COVID-19, there is an urgency to getting workers back into the building in a safe way. “If you get your building WELL certified, you’re showing you’re putting people first, and it should add some more comfort to be back,” Trentacost said.
