GEA is taking aim at one of the least glamorous but most expensive realities of packaged food production: the product changeover. On Aug. 25, Refrigerated and Frozen Foods reported the company introduced Changeover Assist, a digital application that guides operators through standardized, recipe-specific changeover steps directly on the SmartControl HMI for SmartControl-based machines.
For operations leaders, the hook is not the app itself. It’s what it signals about where food manufacturers are placing their digital bets in 2026: closer to the line, closer to the operator, and tied to measurable minutes of downtime and pounds of scrap.
Changeovers are becoming the new battleground for waste and uptime
Refrigerated and Frozen Foods described Changeover Assist as step-by-step operator guidance that displays only the steps relevant to a specific product changeover, supports multiple languages, and can be augmented with images, video and extra work instructions. Each step is confirmed and documented, and the machine can only restart once required steps have been confirmed, the outlet reported.
For high-mix packaging and forming operations, the rollout details matter: Refrigerated and Frozen Foods reports the application starts with GEA PowerPak thermoformers and the GEA MaxiFormer drum former, and GEA plans to extend it in phases to more machines, including the GEA OptiSlicer. That targets the kinds of lines where format swaps and recipe changes are routine, not rare.

Budgets remain tight. Food Industry Executive reported that 57% of manufacturers named budget constraints as the primary barrier to technology implementation. The same report found that 43% of respondents allocated 26% to 50% of their equipment and system investments to digital and automation projects, indicating that spending continues even as justification requirements increase.
That helps explain the draw of machine-level guidance. A changeover assistant can present a clear value case: fewer incorrect materials loaded, fewer skipped steps, reduced rework, and less unplanned downtime. Those outcomes also align with how companies told Food Industry Executive they gauge success: cost reduction (57%), ROI (49%), and labor cost savings (43%).
Why edge-to-cloud MES is showing up in the same conversations
There’s an architectural point embedded in these moves. Food Industry Executive’s Aug. 27, 2026 analysis on MES argued that 24/7 food plants often can’t rely on a pure-cloud model for their core execution layer, pushing them toward edge-to-cloud designs that keep critical functions resilient locally while still using the cloud for enterprise visibility and centralized updates.
GEA’s approach, as described by Refrigerated and Frozen Foods, fits that pattern: the instructions and gating logic live at the HMI where the operator executes the work, while content and governance can be managed centrally through InsightPartner. For multi-site operators, that split is operationally attractive because it allows corporate engineering to control “gold standard” changeover procedures while plants keep running through network blips.

For plants already rolling out cloud MES, the practical question becomes integration depth: whether changeover steps and confirmations become first-class MES events (with timestamps, product IDs and lot context) or remain trapped in an OEM island. The difference shows up later when teams try to correlate changeover behavior with yield, allergen controls, and sanitation cycles.
Waste is still engineered, and older buildings can erase digital gains
