Casey Williams, P.E. is a board member for the ACE Mentor Program of America‘s Greater Boston Chapter.

“I’d like to tell you about a program that makes a difference for a diverse group of high school students, the ACE Mentor Program of Greater Boston.

I hope that, after hearing this, you will want to learn more. ACE is a free after-school program for high school students interested in architecture, construction and engineering, and we serve students from high schools around greater Boston.

Once a week, our students meet with their mentors who are ACE industry professionals, to work on a hands-on design project and to hear about career pathways.

One of my recent students was a young Black woman interested in civil engineering, just like me. And, after a year in our program, she was hired for a summer internship with my firm. Then, the next summer, she was hired for an internship in construction management. Those internships changed her life, and she is currently pursuing a degree in civil engineering and plans to work in construction management when she graduates.

She returned to ACE this year as a mentor. I am so proud of her, and I promise you that watching her grow and being a part of her journey has been incredibly rewarding.

This past year was challenging. We met students online, but they put in the effort, and their designs were amazing. We were also thrilled to be able to award a record high $168,000 in scholarships to our seniors to pursue their college dreams.

We are really looking forward to next year, [but] we might need your help. We hope to return in person with our students in October while continuing to offer a virtual option. We need people to serve as mentors, to sponsor our program and to hire our kids and our alumni for summer internships.”
