The single-serve coffee industry is at a pivotal moment, where convenience and sustainability are no longer competing priorities but parallel expectations shaping innovation. At gatherings like the AMI Single Serve Coffee Conference in Tampa, the conversation has clearly shifted from abstract goals to tangible, commercially viable solutions—especially in the realm of compostable and recyclable packaging. Yet, as new materials emerge, the industry faces a familiar but critical tension: how to maintain the premium taste and shelf-life stability consumers expect while transitioning to more sustainable formats. This challenge underscores a broader transformation, where material science is becoming just as central to the coffee experience as the beans themselves.

At the same time, evolving labeling standards, certification pathways, and performance requirements are adding layers of complexity that demand faster collaboration and smarter prototyping. Companies that can anticipate unmet needs and move beyond incremental improvements will define the next wave of innovation in this fast-moving market. To better understand how these dynamics are shaping the future of single-serve capsules, we turn to insights from Oscar Martin, Senior Vice President, and Daniel Dutesco, Global Marketing Director and Demand Generation at TekniPlex.

It's end of day one. So, obviously, there was lots of different topics, lots of different conversations today. What trickled to the top for you? What were some of the things that you kept reoccurring in the conversation that you keep hearing over and over? Yeah. Great question, Daniel. There are some key themes around upholstability. Right? There are some new technology providers that are out there that have mere commercial ready solutions that we would like to have some follow-up conversations around. Yeah. Some some discussion around how to effectively and what are the requirements for labeling from a sustainability perspective. Yeah. You know, the shelf life requirements for compostable products, the certifications, where to get those certifications certified at. And so I think there's definitely some follow-up conversations we want to have with some of those technology think some of the challenges for them that came was, you know, what about taste? How does it compostable, does the experience also come through in the end product? So how does with your traditional cups? Absolutely. So second question, you presented today Yes. On the future of kind of how to future proof single serve capsules. Take me through a little bit through the presentation. Oh, We went through the four waves of of, the consumer experience. Okay. And that fourth wave is all about the next generation and how that experience is coming to life. And most importantly, how can Material Science Solutions enable that whole experience, you know, with regard to premium, taste and flavor through shelf life stability, affordability and convenience. Okay. If from all those different things, if there's one thing you would like people to take away from, the different conversations you had with them Oh, yeah. What would it be? It's a very dynamic market. Things are moving at a very fast scale, which is why responding to customer unmet needs is important. Rapid prototyping, proof of concepts, so we can be two steps ahead from a market perspective and not be a fast follower. Yeah. For me, it's, as well if I can, I think everything you put together at the GIC, hearing the people talk, it's again coming back to the offer we're building there is actually very, very exciting and promising? Absolutely. And and having multiple solutions that are ready Yeah. Whether it's molded fiber Yeah. Or whether it's paper, whether it's recyclable plastic solutions with PCR, you have to be ready with alternatives because this market is moving at a phenomenal pace. That's incredible. Alright.
