Statement of Work (SOW)
A statement of work (SOW) is the contract document that defines a professional services engagement: scope, deliverables, timeline, acceptance criteria, and price. It is the operating agreement that governs what is in and out of scope.
Well-written SOWs prevent the two classic failure modes of services work, scope creep and disputed acceptance. Mature firms treat SOW templates and change-order discipline as core commercial infrastructure, not paperwork.
In practice
In the business-services industry, a Statement of Work (SOW) is routinely used by project managers, contracts managers, and service delivery teams to establish clear expectations between clients and service providers. It drives critical decisions regarding resource allocation, timelines, and budget approvals. By clearly defining scope and deliverables, the SOW minimizes the risk of scope creep and disputes, ultimately protecting profit margins and ensuring projects are completed on time and to client specifications.
