OT/IT Convergence

OT/IT convergence is the merging of operational technology, the control systems that run physical processes, with information technology, the systems that manage data and business applications. It connects the factory floor to the enterprise and the cloud.

Historically OT and IT were separate worlds with different priorities, uptime and safety versus data and security. Convergence unlocks analytics, remote monitoring, and predictive maintenance, but it also expands the attack surface, which is why industrial cybersecurity has become inseparable from digital transformation on the plant floor.

In practice

In the industrial-IoT sector, OT/IT convergence manifests in daily tasks where operations teams and IT professionals collaborate to ensure real-time data flow from machines to enterprise systems. For example, engineers may optimize production processes using insights gathered from cloud-based analytics, while IT teams secure these data flows against cyber threats. This integration drives strategic decisions such as predictive maintenance or supply chain optimization, ultimately enhancing efficiencies and reducing costs, making it crucial for competitive advantage and profitability.
