Traceability (Lot Tracking)

Food traceability is the ability to track a product and its ingredients through every step of the supply chain by lot or batch, in both directions. It is what makes targeted recalls possible and is increasingly mandated by regulation such as FSMA 204.

Effective traceability requires capturing key data elements at each critical tracking event, from receiving to shipping. Companies are moving from paper and spreadsheets to interoperable digital records to meet recall speed expectations.

In practice

In the food-beverage industry, traceability involves production managers, quality control teams, and supply chain analysts who use lot tracking to monitor ingredients from source to shelf. It drives critical decisions during recalls, ensuring swift removal of affected products, which safeguards consumer health and brand reputation. With regulations like FSMA 204 enforcing traceability, companies must maintain detailed records for compliance. This not only mitigates risks but also enhances operational efficiency, ultimately impacting profitability and consumer trust.
