Requests for Information (RFIs)

In construction, a request for information (RFI) is the formal process a contractor uses to get clarification on drawings, specifications, or conflicts before proceeding with work. RFI volume and response time are common indicators of project health.

Slow or high-volume RFI cycles correlate with rework and claims, which is why project teams track them closely in construction management platforms. Cleaner coordination in design, often via BIM, is the structural fix.

In practice

In the engineering-and-construction industry, RFIs are typically handled by project managers and field engineers who seek clarifications on architectural drawings or technical specifications. These requests drive critical decisions regarding project timelines, resource allocation, and compliance with contract terms. A high volume of RFIs can indicate potential design flaws or miscommunications, signaling risk factors that can lead to delays and cost overruns, making timely and accurate responses vital for maintaining project health and ensuring profitability.
