Competency-Based Education (CBE)

Competency-based education (CBE) is a model where learners advance by demonstrating mastery of defined skills rather than by seat time or credit hours. Progress is measured against transparent competencies, often with flexible pacing.

CBE reshapes assessment, credentialing, and funding models, and it underlies much of the growth in micro-credentials and workforce-aligned programs. Technology platforms matter here because tracking mastery requires richer data than traditional grading.

In practice

In the education-technology industry, Competency-Based Education (CBE) drives product development and instructional design decisions by focusing on user needs for personalized learning experiences. Educators and administrators evaluate CBE platforms based on how effectively they assess and track skill mastery in real-time. This emphasis on competency helps institutions improve student outcomes, enhances engagement, and can lead to more efficient resource allocation, making CBE a commercially appealing model for companies aiming to meet the demands of a skills-oriented workforce.
