> GM, Ford and other legacy automakers expect a tighter 2027 as commodity, logistics and memory-chip costs rise. Cost cuts, efficiency gains and demand for higher-margin vehicles are the levers they are using.

## Key points

- GlobalData expects global light-vehicle production to grow less than 1% next year after a 2.1% decline in 2026.
- GM CFO Paul Jacobson flagged a possible $2 billion inflation headwind next year from commodities, logistics and DRAM chips.
- Ford expects next year's results to be in line with 2026.

Legacy automakers are heading into 2027 leaning on cost discipline as production stays flat. GlobalData expects global light-vehicle production of about 90.96 million units in 2026, down 2.1% from last year, and growth of less than 1% next year, CNBC reported. CNBC said GM and others have offset outside pressures through cost cuts, operational efficiencies and resilient demand for higher-margin vehicles.

GM CEO Mary Barra still expects next year to improve on this one. She told investors on Oct. 20 that 2027 should be stronger, with a condition attached.

> We continue to believe that 2027 will be another strong year and better than 2026, assuming customer demand remains strong, and commodity, logistics and other recent cost pressures moderate. — Mary Barra, CEO, General Motors

## Where the cost pressure comes from

GM CFO Paul Jacobson said it is too early to forecast 2027 formally, but flagged that inflationary costs could add another $2 billion headwind next year, similar to this year, according to CNBC. He pointed to commodity inflation, logistics and DRAM memory chips. Briefs Finance reported the same roughly $2 billion inflation headwind and the same three cost drivers.

Ford said it expects next year's results to be in line with 2026. In Europe, Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz and BMW have trimmed 2026 outlooks, citing U.S. tariffs among other pressures.

## The levers automakers are pulling

Restructuring is the most visible response. BMW said accelerated restructuring will reduce its 2026 automotive pretax margin by 2.5 percentage points, and it is targeting a 3% to 5% pretax margin in 2028. Stellantis has reaffirmed its 2026 guidance.

Toyota is the bright spot. It raised its full-year operating income outlook by 500 billion yen, about $3.2 billion, citing a weaker yen and U.S. hybrid demand, according to CNBC and Briefs Finance.

Demand has held up so far. Cox Automotive data put the average new-vehicle transaction price above $50,500 in September, just under the record of $50,614 set in December 2025.

> Consumers remain under financial pressure, but the vehicle demand continues to hold, showing more resiliency in the auto industry than we've seen in other parts of the economy. — Jeremy Robb, Chief Economist, Cox Automotive

## What to watch

Pricing has limits. RBC Capital Markets analyst Tom Narayan told CNBC, "There's only so much pricing you can push to consumers." The next markers are GM's formal 2027 guidance and whether commodity and logistics pressures ease, the conditions Barra tied to a stronger year.
