On tours, staff show an infographic comparing sightline distances at Ryan Field with those at the Intuit Dome, the Los Angeles Clippers' arena. In a November 2024 appearance on CNBC's Squawk Box, Ryan described a premium experience for everybody. He said that at a lot of college football stadiums, people in the skyboxes get seats and everyone else sits on a bench, while at Ryan Field "everybody has a seat" and "everybody's protected from the weather by a canopy."

His case rests on television. Every Big Ten game is on TV, he argued, so the reason to buy a ticket is to share the experience with other people. A farthest-seat distance works as a planning benchmark here because it is concrete and easy to compare.

## A Chicago food festival in the plaza

Ryan Field's 200,000 square feet of festival grounds, branded the Village, will host six Chicago food vendors.

The lineup leans on names Chicago diners already know. Michelin-starred chef Rick Bayless brings Frontera Tortas y Tacos, a new version of his Tortazo fast-casual concept. Stephanie Izard, the Evanston-born Top Chef winner and 2013 James Beard Best Chef for the Great Lakes region, brings Goatdown, a shareable game-day take on Girl & the Goat.

Ryan told the Tribune that the plaza space needed a use and that the festival was a way to celebrate Chicago as a food city. The three-year term suggests the venue wants a lineup that stays put long enough for fans to learn it.

## Built for more than seven Saturdays

Ryan has said the new stadium should become year-round space for the campus community, Evanston and Chicago.

The Daily Northwestern reported in June that the stadium will feature the ETHS-New Trier football game and several community festivals throughout the year.

Ryan also framed the project as a bet on the Chicago corporate community, pitching it as Chicago's Big Ten stadium. That positioning helps explain the heavy investment in lounges and private dining.
