> MLS has hired London advisory firm Altius8 to test the market for a presenting sponsor, a deal type common in Europe and nearly unknown in U.S. leagues.

## Key points

- An eight-figure presenting deal would slot in as MLS's third-largest commercial contract, behind Apple's $2.5 billion media agreement and Adidas's $830 million extension through 2030, giving brand partnership teams a rare public price band for a U.S. league-level asset.
- MLS is deliberately splitting the European model: it wants the presenting-sponsor revenue LaLiga, Ligue 1 and Serie A collect, without putting a brand name in front of the league the way the Premier League did with Barclays until 2016.
- The asset list is not fixed. Chief revenue officer Carter Ladd says there is no predefined package, so what a bidder gets, and whether the league-wide jersey patch is on the table, is being decided now.

Major League Soccer has hired a London advisory firm to find out what a presenting sponsorship of an entire American league is worth. Early conversations have landed in the eight figures, according to Sportico's Justin Birnbaum and Eben Novy-Williams, who reported on September 18 that MLS retained Altius8 to run the process, citing multiple people with direct knowledge of the matter.

That is a category that barely exists in U.S. sports. Presenting, title and naming-rights deals sit on top of three of Europe's Big Five soccer leagues, Sportico noted, while such sponsorships are relatively unheard of in major U.S. sports, according to the outlet. If MLS finds a taker, the people familiar with the talks told Sportico it would likely rank among the most expensive commercial agreements the league has ever signed.

Nothing is agreed. Sportico was explicit that a deal might not happen at all, and Altius8 did not respond to the outlet's request for comment. For the brand partnerships lead who has been waiting for a league-scale U.S. soccer asset to come to market, though, the shopping has started.

## No predefined package, and an open question on the jersey

The most useful detail in Sportico's reporting for anyone thinking about bidding is what MLS has not decided. Chief revenue officer Carter Ladd told the outlet the league is not approaching the opportunity with a predefined sponsorship package. In practice that means the asset list is being built alongside the buyer conversations rather than ahead of them.

The jersey is the obvious flashpoint. Every MLS club wears a league-wide Apple patch, and one person with knowledge of the talks suggested to Sportico that a presenting sponsor could take that spot. Ladd, asked directly, said Apple will continue to appear on club uniforms.

Read those two statements together and the picture is a negotiation still in motion, with the league protecting its media partner's visibility while leaving room to define what a presenting sponsor actually receives. Sportico pointed out that a presenting sponsorship becomes considerably more valuable when additional assets like patches are bundled in. For a bidder, the sharper question is therefore which inventory MLS is willing to carve out of existing partner rights, and which it is not.

## Europe's model, minus the rename

Spain's top flight officially calls itself LaLiga EA Sports. France's is Ligue 1 McDonald's. Italy's is Serie A Enilive. Germany's Bundesliga, Sportico noted, is the exception among the continent's biggest leagues and carries no such sponsor.

England has been through the cycle already. Barclays paid to rebrand the men's top division as the Barclays Premier League for 12 years before the league dropped the category ahead of the 2016-17 season, a move Sportico described as an effort to present the brand more like the NBA and NFL. Barclays still holds rights to the Women's Super League.

MLS is trying to thread the needle. Ladd told Sportico the league has no plans to put a corporate name in front of its own, so the Barclays-style rename is off the table. What remains is the revenue the European leagues collect from the category, attached to a league that keeps calling itself MLS.

> MLS wants the money the European leagues collect from a presenting sponsor without the rename the Premier League spent 12 years living with and then walked away from.

That distinction matters to a brand weighing the bid. A title deal that changes the league's name buys ubiquity in every broadcast mention and headline. A presenting deal that does not will need its value delivered through defined inventory instead, which loops back to the unresolved asset list.

## Where eight figures sits on the MLS deal sheet

Sportico laid out the two contracts above it. Apple's media deal was signed as a 10-year, $2.5 billion agreement, which the outlet has reported was later shortened. Adidas holds a six-year, $830 million extension running through 2030.

An eight-figure presenting deal would sit behind both of those and ahead of other major league-wide deals, according to the people who spoke with Sportico. That is a rare public price band for a top-tier U.S. league asset, and it gives a sponsorship buyer a reference point that the European comparables do not, since Sportico did not attach dollar figures to the LaLiga, Ligue 1 or Serie A arrangements.

The league's commercial base has been growing into that price. In March 2024, Marketing Brew's Alyssa Meyers reported league figures showing partnership revenue up 17% from 2022 to 2023 and club-level sponsorship revenue up 15% year over year at that point in the 2024 season. Merchandise sold through the league's online store was up 44%, and season ticket revenue was up 25% as of mid-February 2024, per the same report.

Block Field

Those are 2024 numbers, and they describe momentum rather than the current year. They do show the roster a presenting sponsor would be joining. Marketing Brew listed Adidas, EA Sports, Celsius, AT&T, Allstate and BodyArmor among league partners, along with Audi, Diageo's Captain Morgan in the U.S., Asahi in Canada, and two 2022 arrivals from outside the usual sports categories: Caterpillar and DoorDash.

The audience pitch has been consistent too. Jen Cramer, MLS's executive vice president of partnership marketing, told Marketing Brew in 2024 that 71% of MLS fans are Gen Z or millennial and 30% are Hispanic. For a brand whose media plan is built around reaching under-45 and multicultural buyers at national scale, that profile is the reason a presenting position across all clubs reads differently from a single-team deal.

## Why the sale is timed to next summer

MLS is changing a lot at once. Sportico reported the shift to what the league calls MLS 3.0 brings a new calendar, a new playoff format and a new commissioner over the next 12 months. Ladd framed the sponsorship exploration as the commercial half of that overhaul, telling the outlet that after 15 or 16 years of expansion the foundation is built, and that the changes arriving next summer make this the natural moment for the commercial strategy to evolve with it.

The logic holds up from the buyer's side. A sponsor signing a multiyear league-level agreement wants to attach to a format that will be stable for the length of the term, and a league launching a new calendar and playoff structure has an obvious reason to sell the reset as a fresh start. Corporate support has long been one of the pillars of the MLS business model; a 2021 Harvard Business School working paper by Stephen Greyser and Kenneth Cortsen treated it as a commercial cornerstone alongside fandom and television and digital content.

Sportico also placed the move in a run of commercial experiments by the single-entity league over the past few years, including a 2023 relaunch of its annual joint competition. Presenting sponsorships are common in many overseas soccer leagues but relatively unheard of in major U.S. sports, according to Sportico.

For a brand with a national footprint in the U.S. and Canada, an existing soccer strategy, and budget authority in the tens of millions, this is the window in which the asset list gets shaped. For everyone else in sports sponsorship, the deal is a test case: whether a major North American league can sell a presenting position without renaming itself, and what price the market puts on it.

The two markers to watch are whether MLS names a partner before the new calendar takes effect next summer, and what happens to the jersey patch when it does. Ladd has said Apple stays on the uniforms. What else ends up in the package is the part Altius8 is now being paid to find out.
