> Rice Stadium is now First Community Stadium. The 20-year deal bundles campus banking and internships, and much of it could run in a smaller renovated venue.

## Key points

- First Community signed for 20 years just before the $120M Gateway Project, which is expected to begin at the end of this season and continue through 2027 and will reduce capacity from 47,000 to 30,000. That suggests much of the deal could run in a renovated, smaller venue.
- The naming deal also makes First Community the official financial institution of Rice Football, Rice Athletics and the Association of Rice Alumni, with internships, career services and branded cards attached. Rice describes it as a naming rights and campus collaboration agreement.
- Rice is also pursuing a jersey patch sponsor and naming rights for other venues. George said Rice wants deals that make sense for the university as a whole.

Super Bowl VIII was played there. John F. Kennedy gave his 1962 "We choose to go to the moon" speech there. Known as Rice Stadium since it opened in 1950, the stadium will now go by a different name for the first time: Rice University has signed a 20-year naming-rights agreement with Houston-based First Community Credit Union, and Rice Stadium is now First Community Stadium, Joseph Duarte reported in the Houston Chronicle.

The interesting part is the timing. The stadium is headed for a significant renovation under the $120 million Gateway Project. According to the Houston Chronicle, work is expected to get underway once this season ends and run through 2027, and capacity will drop from 47,000 to 30,000. First Community signed for 20 years, which suggests much of the contract could play out in a stadium that looks very different from today's. That could be useful for two groups in particular: athletic departments outside the Power conferences planning their own renovations, and the regional banks and credit unions deciding whether a stadium name is worth the money.

## What First Community bought

The stadium name is the visible part. The rest of the deal reaches well past the field. Rice's own announcement, written by Andrew Bell for Rice News, describes a naming-rights and campus collaboration agreement. Here are the pieces it and the student paper list:

- Official financial institution of Rice Football, Rice Athletics and the Association of Rice Alumni
- Financial literacy education across campus
- Internship programs for Rice students
- Work with Rice's Center for Career Development on post-graduation opportunities
- Banking services and special programs for students, alumni, faculty and staff
- Rice Athletics-branded debit and credit cards with access to special events and perks
- Higher education opportunities at Rice for First Community employees, according to CEO TJ Tijerina in The Rice Thresher

Read as a whole, the list looks a lot like a member-acquisition channel. A credit union lives on enrolling members. This deal puts First Community in front of students before they open their first accounts, alumni through their own association, and fans through a card in their wallet. The last item on the list runs the other way, with Rice offering education to the sponsor's staff. That suggests both sides wanted something closer to an institutional relationship than a sponsorship.

Interim athletic director Eric George called the agreement critical. He said it gives the department money to compete on the field and also to support student-athletes' career development over the long term, according to Chandler France of the Houston Business Journal. The deal includes internship and career-services components, so the second part of George's claim comes with a built-in way to deliver on it.

## A Houston lender with teacher roots

Educators in Spring Branch ISD founded First Community in 1954, which is why a campus-wide education package reads less like a stretch for this sponsor than it might for others. Its current footprint, from Rice's announcement, is regional and substantial:

Block Field

First Community has 14 full-service branches and serves 41 Texas counties. The Rice Thresher's Andersen Pickard reported that the First Community logo is painted on the field, which will give the credit union airtime during Owls broadcasts. For a credit union with that footprint, broadcast exposure could reach people well beyond its branches.

University leadership hasn't said where First Community's branding will appear once the Gateway Project is finished. For now, the field and the broadcast are the main inventory.

## A smaller, pricier stadium for most of the term

The renovation keeps elements of the 1950 design on the east side and in the lower bowl. It adds private suites and premium seating, and capacity falls from 47,000 to 30,000. Rice President Reginald DesRoches described the name change as the "next step" for the west side of campus, an area about to go through a major change, the Houston Chronicle reported.

This is where a 20-year term makes sense. With construction expected to continue through 2027, a 20-year term suggests much of the deal could run in the renovated stadium. A sponsor signing now could have its name on the venue from the day it reopens, including when Rice starts marketing the new suites and premium seats.

The strongest objection is the head count. Fewer seats means fewer people see the name in person every Saturday. The structure of the deal answers much of that: the broadcast exposure, the alumni association, the branded cards and the campus programs don't depend on how many people are in the stands. A premium-heavy bowl also tends to concentrate the kind of fans a financial institution wants to reach, though that's a reasonable inference and not something either party has said.

## From a year-long search to an eight-week close

The search started well before the current leadership. Eric George, the interim athletic director, said Rice started looking for a naming-rights partner more than a year ago, the Houston Chronicle reported. Rice credits Elevate with leading the national search. DesRoches told the Thresher the deal had been in the works for almost a year and happened to be finalized under the interim athletic director.

The close was fast. George took over after athletic director Tommy McClelland departed on Aug. 5 and first met with First Community's leadership the following Monday, the Thresher reported. He said they worked as quickly as they could to have the deal ready for this season. ESPN's Thamel reported that George initiated the conversation with First Community and completed the deal for Rice. DesRoches said the deal had been in the works for almost a year. Long groundwork followed by a quick close under new leadership is a sequence other departments facing leadership changes may recognize.

Rice isn't done selling. It is also looking for a jersey patch sponsor and naming rights for other athletic venues. George told the Chronicle that the department needs the money and intends to raise it in a thoughtful way, with deals that make sense for the university as a whole.

Block Field

The next markers are physical. The real test of this deal starts once the renovated 30,000-seat stadium opens: whose name ends up on the suites, the premium club and the jersey, and whether those deals fit around the credit union already on the stadium.
