> EA and the NFL are putting real stadium sponsor signs into Madden NFL, a game fans play more than 2 billion times a year.

## Key points

- The ticket into Madden's virtual stadiums is a real NFL sponsorship contract: only confirmed club and league sponsors are eligible, subject to some exclusions.
- More than 2 billion games a year counts how often Madden is played. It doesn't measure how long a sign is on screen, so sponsors need an exposure method before they can put a value on the placement.
- The next club announcement and any league-level partner will test whether Madden signage becomes a standard line in NFL sponsorship proposals.

Electronic Arts and the NFL have announced the EA Sports Madden NFL Virtual Stadium Sponsorship Program, which brings real-world stadium sponsor signage into Madden NFL on console and mobile.

For anyone who manages a sponsorship portfolio, the key detail is who gets in. EA's announcement limits eligibility to confirmed NFL club and league sponsors, subject to certain exclusions. So the in-game sign rides on a physical contract a brand already holds. That changes who has something new to sell, and who gets asked about it first.

## Copying the concourse into the game

As more brands sign on, the sponsor signs inside Madden NFL stadiums are meant to match what fans see at actual NFL venues.

The signs are built into the stadium and don't interrupt gameplay. EA presents that as the reason players will put up with them. In practice, a sponsor doesn't need a new creative concept for Madden. The job is to reproduce what's already on the fascia in the building it sponsors. The templates suggest EA wants that reproduction step to be routine, which matters if the program is going to grow beyond its first club.

Brian Napoli, the Eagles' senior vice president of corporate partnerships, talked about fans expecting Madden to capture one of the league's most recognizable home environments, sponsors included. Ed Kiang, the NFL's vice president of interactive and experiential licensing, described it as club partners carrying their physical stadium assets into the digital arena. Both are talking about an asset the club already owns and can now extend.

## What 2 billion games measures

Block Field

EA's figure of more than 2 billion games a year is a count of games played. It doesn't tell a sponsor how many seconds a sign sits on screen, or in which views.

Signage that never interrupts gameplay is also signage that competes with the snap for the player's attention, and passive placement could prove harder to value than an interruptive ad unit.

## A rights-holder model inside EA's ad push

Alex Dao, EA's vice president of advertising and sponsorships, called the Madden program an example of integrated brand opportunities built around the player experience.

Assets have crossed between game and broadcast before, mostly in the other direction. In December 2024, NewscastStudio reported on NBC Sports' Madden NFL Cast on Peacock, built with the NFL, EA Sports and Genius Sports. It laid Madden NFL 25 graphics, play cards and player ratings over a live Texans-Chiefs game. The Madden sponsorship program runs the other way, bringing the real stadium into the game, signs included.

## Club partnership desks move first

Right behind them are brand-side sponsorship directors whose signs already hang in an NFL building.

Pricing and commercial terms weren't part of the announcement. That leaves open whether clubs will offer Madden placement as a bonus inside existing deals or charge for it as a separate add-on.

The next club announcement will be the first real test. Watch for one, and for whether a league-level partner signs before the season ends. If several clubs follow the Eagles, a Madden line could start showing up in NFL sponsorship proposals. If Philadelphia stays alone, the program is still a pilot.
