## Key points

- Forrester’s call that 20% of new CMO job descriptions will ask for genAI experience shows genAI becoming table stakes; vendors should expect tighter definitions of “use,” performance clauses and shorter ramps in martech contracts.
- The CMO Survey’s emphasis on contracts under pressure suggests vendor renewals will be won on measurable cycle-time and productivity outcomes, not feature roadmaps.

Around 80% of CMOs say they’ve already deployed generative AI to speed up internal marketing work, especially content creation and social media. That’s the easy part. The harder part is showing enough measurable business impact to keep budgets and vendor contracts intact while economic pressure pushes marketing leaders back toward “proven” plays.

That tension shows up across three lenses: The CMO Survey’s March 2026 analysis says marketing contracts are under economic pressure despite growing value and AI gains; Deloitte’s 2026 CMO Survey write-up notes increased C-suite pressure and says some CMOs are returning to established strategies; and BCG’s 2024 CMO survey with the Association of National Advertisers (ANA) says the most promising strategic GenAI areas, including personalization, customer insight generation, and predictive analytics, will take longer to develop and deploy at scale.

## GenAI is widespread, but mostly where it saves time, not where it changes revenue math

BCG reported in June 2024 that “around 80%” of surveyed CMOs had deployed GenAI, primarily to make internal processes faster, more productive, and less labor intensive. In BCG’s framing, these are the quick wins: draft copy, images, and social engagement workflows that can compress campaign timelines.

BCG also drew a line between what’s already working and what’s still stuck in the queue. The more strategic applications, personalization, customer insight generation, and predictive analytics, were described as taking longer to develop and deploy at scale. For operators, that distinction matters because it predicts where scrutiny will land first: on any project that depends on data unification, identity resolution, and model governance across channels.

## Budget pressure is showing up in contract terms and proof standards

The CMO Survey’s March 31, 2026 blog post, an analysis of the survey’s 35th edition results, says marketing contracts are under economic pressure despite growing value and AI gains.

Deloitte’s 2026 CMO Survey page shares highlights from the 35th edition of The CMO Survey and notes that the survey is conducted by Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business professor Christine Moorman. The page says some CMOs are returning to established strategies due to increased C-suite pressure. It also says marketers cite “the right talent” over “the right technology” as the most important driver of revenue growth.

Read together, the message for enterprise buyers is that GenAI’s next phase will be negotiated. Expect more performance clauses, shorter ramp periods, and tighter definitions of what counts as “use” in martech contracts. The vendors who win will be the ones who can attach their product to cycle time, throughput, and controlled uplift, not just content volume.

## Integration, not another cloud, is where roadmaps are being rewritten

Forrester’s “Predictions 2024” post said CMOs would prioritize practicality in 2024 and highlighted martech integrations as part of that shift. Forrester predicted that “half of CMOs” would choose ecosystem integration over “marketing cloud dreams.”

Forrester predicted that “experience with generative AI” would show up in 20% of new CMO job descriptions.

## Where this lands for marketing ops, CIOs, and procurement teams

The combined signal from Duke/Deloitte, BCG, and Forrester is that GenAI is already a table-stakes capability inside marketing teams, but the spend is being redirected toward whatever makes those deployments reliable and defensible: data, integration, and controls. For organizations with fragmented customer data, heavy agency dependence, or complex brand governance, that’s where timelines can slip and where contract pressure will hit first.

- Rewrite genAI business cases around operational outcomes: BCG reports that around 80% of CMOs have already deployed GenAI to make internal processes faster, more productive, and less labor intensive.
- Audit talent alongside tech: Deloitte’s 2026 CMO Survey page says marketers cite “the right talent” over “the right technology” as the most important driver of revenue growth.
- Plan for longer timelines in strategic use cases: BCG says the most promising strategic GenAI areas, including personalization, customer insight generation, and predictive analytics, will take longer to develop and deploy at scale.
- Account for tougher renewals: The CMO Survey’s March 31, 2026 analysis says marketing contracts are under economic pressure despite growing value and AI gains.
