> MarketsandMarkets expects cloud deployment to hold the largest MES share by 2032, with hybrid models important in regulated and security-sensitive industries.

## Key points

- The harder part of linking MES to PLCs, SCADA and DCS is a shared data model and clear ownership of control logic. Connectivity is the easier part, and plants that skip the modeling end up building translation layers.

Manufacturers are adopting MES platforms for real-time production monitoring, traceability and automated quality management. Demand is growing particularly in automotive, pharmaceuticals, electronics, aerospace and food and beverage. The research firm names Siemens, Dassault Systèmes, SAP, Rockwell Automation and Honeywell International as key players in the market. It also lists smaller players including MasterControl, Miracom, MPDV, Parsec Automation and Andea, which sell configurable, industry-specific systems.

## Where the services money goes

Its argument is that linking MES to programmable logic controllers, SCADA or distributed control systems goes well beyond a connectivity job.

The article sets out six practices that it says plants tend to overlook:

1. Establish a common data model before integration begins
2. Model process relationships as well as the equipment hierarchy
3. Define who owns the control logic
4. Prioritize contextualized data
5. Design for continuous change
6. Rethink operator interfaces

Standards such as ISA-95 organize a factory into enterprise, site, area, work center, unit and process cell levels. But Control Engineering points out that adopting the hierarchy accomplishes little unless every system maps its data into it the same way. If they don't, teams spend their time building interfaces and translation layers instead of getting value from the integration. The mismatches pile up and make it hard to reuse control logic across lines or sites.

A production order defines a product and its routing, and that routing runs through several machines, recipes and material state changes. If the integration captures only the hierarchy, each machine does its own job correctly but knows nothing about what happens upstream or downstream. In high-mix, low-volume plants, the article notes, configurations change too often to hardcode at the machine level.

## Regulated plants and the hybrid split

MarketsandMarkets expects cloud deployment to hold the largest share of the market by 2032. It credits scalability, lower upfront infrastructure costs, remote access and faster software updates. In a hybrid model, sensitive production data and critical operational functions stay on site, while cloud services handle analytics, central monitoring and company-wide visibility.

The firm expects hybrid to matter most in pharmaceuticals, aerospace, automotive and food and beverage, where data security, regulatory compliance and uninterrupted operations are essential.

MarketsandMarkets attributes the pharmaceuticals and life sciences segment's 15.3% growth rate to regulatory requirements and demand for electronic batch records, traceability and automated quality control. Automotive is still forecast to hold the largest share by industry, as carmakers use MES to coordinate complex assembly and maintain traceability.

By region, Asia Pacific is projected to grow fastest. The forecast points to industrialization, expanding manufacturing capacity and smart-factory investment in China, India, Japan and South Korea.

## Forecasts disagree on size, not direction

Not every research firm sizes this market the same way. Fortune Business Insights, in a report updated October 12, values the MES market at $16.57 billion in 2025. It projects $18.61 billion in 2026 and $56.65 billion by 2034, a 14.9% compound annual rate. Its report also segments the market by vendor type, into pure-play vendors and enterprise integrators.

In a 2014 analysis published by Quality Magazine, Frost & Sullivan put 2013 MES revenue at $4.58 billion and projected $8.64 billion by 2020. Senior research analyst Srikanth Madapura Shivaswamy expected primary revenue to move from services to software licensing and support. In his view, that shift would push vendors toward off-the-shelf products with fast turnaround. The same analysis named high costs, complexity and long implementation times as reasons manufacturers held back.

The definitions differ between the two reports: Frost & Sullivan grouped support with software licensing, while MarketsandMarkets counts ongoing technical support as a service.

## What would change the read

For whoever approves an MES budget, that means scoping the data model, what stays on site in a hybrid setup and control-logic ownership with the same care as the license, whether the shortlist leans toward Siemens and SAP or toward a configurable specialist like MPDV.
