The mechanical and electrical specialty contractors who carry those scopes have, in the society's words, a significant influence over whether a project hits its cost and schedule. When the people managing them lack a working understanding of the systems, ASCE says the result can be mismanagement, cost overruns, delayed schedules and, at the end of the line, unhappy owners.

The proposed fix is not turning project managers into engineers. ASCE positions the course as foundational knowledge, enough for practitioners to engage contractors during the early phases of design and construction rather than discovering problems after the ductwork is hung. That is a claim about timing as much as content: the value ASCE describes is front-loaded, in the conversations that happen before scopes are locked.

Fourteen hours will not make anyone a mechanical estimator. The pitch is that it makes the person across the table from one harder to surprise.

## Two days, four systems, and an EV charging module

The outline ASCE publishes is more specific than the typical continuing-education blurb. Day one runs through mechanical and electrical construction basics, planning and estimating fundamentals, MEP layout and coordination, and an overview of startup and commissioning, then moves into HVAC equipment and distribution, thermal comfort and heat transfer, and a block on electric heating, solar thermal and sustainable systems.

Day two is electrical and plumbing. ASCE lists electrical fundamentals, materials and installation methods, design principles and lighting basics, followed by a dedicated segment on electric vehicle infrastructure construction. The plumbing half covers water supply, stormwater, sanitary drainage and wastewater, and closes on fire protection, detection and sprinkler systems.

The EV infrastructure item stands out on a foundations syllabus. Its presence indicates that ASCE treats charging construction as a standard part of the electrical scope a project manager should now expect to see in a set of drawings, alongside lighting and panels. For owners with parking structures or fleet depots in their pipeline, that is the module most likely to touch a live procurement.

The coordination segment is where the industry's software debate lands. A 2016 paper in Advances in Engineering Software described the sheer modeling workload of large MEP projects as one of the unresolved problems in applying BIM to them, and proposed a multi-scale model that the authors applied to a real airport terminal. That research is a decade old, but the underlying tension it names, that the MEP model is often the heaviest thing in the building file, is one reason a manager needs to understand what the coordination drawings are actually resolving.

## Reading the drawings, and the estimate

ASCE's stated learning outcomes read like a job description for the owner's side of the table. Attendees should be able to describe the common MEP systems in a building, identify them in construction documents, and, notably, demonstrate a working knowledge of the contracting professionals involved, including their roles, scope of work and basic estimating units.

That last item is the practical one. A project manager who knows how a mechanical contractor builds a number has a different conversation about a change order than one who does not. ASCE does not promise cost savings from the course, and this article does not either, but the outcome list suggests the society sees estimating literacy, not system design, as the gap it is filling.

The intended audience, per ASCE, is civil engineers, architects and design professionals, project managers, owner's representatives and construction professionals. For an owner running a multi-project capital program where MEP-heavy work such as labs, hospitals or data halls dominates the spend, that list describes the people who approve pay applications every month. For a firm that self-performs mechanical work, the material is likely review.

## Credits, the test, and the 2027 backstop

The course is worth 1.4 CEUs, which ASCE converts at 1.0 CEU to 10 PDHs, so 14 PDHs for the two days. The certificate depends on a short post-test of true-false, multiple-choice or fill-in-the-blank questions, and a passing score of 70% or higher within 30 days of the course. ASCE lists that post-test as the assessment mechanism; the society's page does not describe a project or practical component.

Organizations registering five or more engineers can contact ASCE's continuing education office for group rates, according to the course listing. That option would matter most for a public owner or program manager trying to bring a whole capital projects staff to a common baseline in one session rather than one seat at a time.

Anyone who misses the November dates has two paths. The on-demand version is available through ASCE's learning catalog at any time. The next live webcast is not until September 27-28, 2027, which puts nearly a year between scheduled sessions.
